Prep Roundup: North boys tennis fares well in invitational

Crawfordsville — Terre Haute North won 14 of its 15 matches for the day in dominating the Macy Invitational in boys high school tennis Saturday at Crawfordsville.

The 18th-ranked Patriots got championships from Chris Holcomb and Tate Egan in singles play and from the doubles teams of Ethan Claretto and Alex Farmer and the team of Justin Huxford and Grant Potts.

Greencastle placed sixth, paced by a runner-up finish by Landon Miller at No. 2 singles.

Team scores — Terre Haute North 55, Lake Central 38, Washington 22, Edgewood 18, Crawfordsville 13, Greencastle 12, Lowell 9.

No. 1 singles — Adam Meeker (LC) def. Nate Sanders (THN) 6-0, 7-5.

• Patriots lose two confeence matches — At Greenwood and Indianapolis, Terre Haute North battled powerful Center Grove to a scoreless first half in Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference play Saturday, but lost 2-0.

The Patriots also lost 5-1 at Indianapolis North Central later in the day.

• Patriots suffer first losses — At Carmel and Indianapolis, Terre Haute North lost its Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference opening matches Saturday, 8-0 at Carmel and 3-1 at Ben Davis.

North led at halftime at Ben Davis and outshot the Giants in the second half.

• Thiede sets school record — At Martinsville, Terre Haute South freshman Nikki Thiede broke Kristy Twitchell’s school record for a girls 5K with a time of 18:18 in a second-place finish at the Martinsville Invitational.

Thiede’s time, achieved on a flat course, was more than a minute faster than Twitchell’s record of 19:21

South was fifth as a team behind Columbus North, Indianapolis North Central, Chesterton and Bloomington North.

• South fifth — At Martinsville, Terre Haute South was fifth among 14 teams at the Martinsville Invitational.

Top-ranked Columbus North won with 25 points, trailed by Indianapolis North Central with 60, Chesterton with 93, Martinsville with 135 and South with 146.

Taylor Head led the Braves with a ninth-place finish.
