South swimmers don’t advance at Finals

INDIANAPOLIS — Terre Haute South’s trip to the IHSAA girls swimming state finals at the Indiana University Natatorium was a short one Friday night.

But the experience will give its athletes something to work on for next year.

“You can’t make this environment up,” said South coach Jeff Thompson. “You’ve got to come to the state finals, you’ve got to see what it’s like, you’ve got to feel what it’s like to come in here and see what it’s like to try to swim fast.”

South placed 21st in the opening 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:51.59; only the top 16 finishers in each event advance to today’s finals and consolations.

“On the relay, you’ve got four swimmers that all have to fire at the same time,” Thompson said. “I thought our exchanges were a lot better than they were last weekend [in the Plainfield Sectional]. The scoreboard just didn’t say what we wanted it to say at the end.”

Junior Grace Padget, who swam the opening leg of the relay, also competed in the 100 backstroke. She was 23rd in the preliminary heats, finishing in 59.70.

“Grace, last year, came in, I’m not sure she felt like she belonged here. This year she came in and her confidence was better and she performed at a higher level,” Thompson said.

“Is it where we want here to be timewise? No. But we grew tonight and we’ll get better next year.”
