Sycamores’ Johnson a national champion

She’s first ISU thrower to claim NCAA title

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Indiana State sophomore Felisha Johnson picked up the 12th NCAA title by a Sycamores’ women’s track and field performer Friday, winning the weight throw at Texas A&M in the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Johnson is just the third national champion in program history, joining four-time NCAA pole vault champion Kylie Hutson and seven-time champion sprinter Holli Hyche.

Johnson set a personal best with a heave of 74-feet, 5 3/4.

“She snagged a 70-footer on her second throw, that put her well into the finals,” ISU throws coach Adam Judge told the Tribune-Star. “She could relax and go after some big throws.”

Johnson hit her personal best throw on her last attempt, and three competitors failed to surpass it. ISU senior Kelsey Hanley joined Johnson on the podium in seventh place.

“I was kind of nervous on my last throw that people were going to pass me,” Johnson said. “[Coach Judge] did a lot [to help me]. Having Kelsey here helps a lot too. We both made the podium. We both improved on our ranking.”

ISU women’s track coach Angie Martin was thrilled for Johnson.

“She’s been having some really good practices, but you just never know how they’ll actually perform,” Martin said. “Coach Judge was very optimistic about her abilities.”

Johnson is the first ISU thrower to claim a NCAA title. Sycamore great Christy (Barrett) Sherman finished runner-up once indoors and twice outdoors.

Jeneva McCall of Southern Illinois was second.
