OXFORD, Ohio —
For the third time in the 2012 season the Indiana State volleyball team rallied from an early 2-0 set deficit to force a fifth set, but the Sycamores fell 3-2 to Miami of Ohio in their opening game of the Miami Tournament.
Miami won the first set 25-19 and the second 25-22.
The Sycamores led for nearly the entire third set and found themselves ahead 22-18 before the RedHawks attempted to come back, closing the gap to 23-22. However, a RedHawk service error and attack error gave the Sycamores a 25-22 set win.
Just as they have done two previous times this season the Sycamores rallied and forced a fifth set by winning the fourth set 25-23.
In the fifth set the Sycamores got behind 5-2 early but battled back to 6-4 with kills by junior Shea Doran and sophomore Kyla Thomas. The Sycamores could get no closer however as the RedHawks finished the match on a 9-4 run to win the set 15-8 and the match 3-2.
Doran led the team with a double double with 21 kills and 10 digs. Freshman Victoria Swigarthad eight kills for the Sycamores while freshman Erika Nord added 31 assists.
The Sycamores will continue play at the Miami Tournament Saturday when they face Temple at 1 p.m. and Chicago State at 5 p.m.
Soccer
n ISU falls in Vegas — At Las Vegas, Nev., The Indiana State women’s soccer team fell to the Montana Grizzlies in their opening game of the UNLV Nike Invitational on Friday. Montana won 1-0.
Indiana State (3-3) and Montana (4-3) went scoreless through the opening 45 minutes, playing contrasting styles of soccer.
The Grizzlies took the lead in the 68th minute, getting a header from Erin Craig to score the game’s only goal.
Indiana State’s best chance at a game-tying goal came in the 86th minute, when the Sycamores had a three-on-three situation in the attack. Sophomore Bria Caldwell attempted to send freshman Sydney Lovelace running into the left side of the penalty box, but Caldwell’s pass was just a touch too far for Lovelace and the UM goalkeeper was able to make a sliding grab.
Six different Sycamores tallied one shot for the match, while freshman Erin Mitchell made five saves in goal.
ISU plays their second game of the tournament Sunday as it will play Sacramento State at 2:30 p.m.

Luck having fun with his first OTAs
A year ago, quarterback Andrew Luck was unable to attend the Indianapolis Colts’ organized team activity practices due to school commitments at Stanford.
Luck, though, went on to have a stellar year for the Colts despite the lack of summer work with the team. Still, in a sense, he is a rookie during this year’s OTA workouts.
“These are my first OTAs. I missed these last year, so I think it’s great. It’s great to get on the field with the defense and trouble-shoot some stuff. Obviously, some of us ran some of this stuff [offense] at Stanford [under new offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton]. But to get out there with the defense and trouble-shoot some stuff is good,” Luck said Wednesday as the team wrapped up its first week of on-field voluntary practice sessions. -
