Metro Roundup: Indiana State football team moves up in one poll

TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State improved in one Football Championship Subdivision college poll and held steady in another going into the regular-season finale at Youngstown State at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The Sycamores remained No. 18 in this week’s The Sports Network poll following a week off and moved up to No. 19 in this week’s FCS coaches poll.

ISU is also No. 8 in the most recent GridIron Power Index, with new rankings due to come out this morning.

Saturday’s game against Youngstown State will be televised nationally on ESPN 3.

College sports

• Engineers take slim lead — Rose-Hulman holds the lead in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Commissioner’s Cup standings through the 2012 fall sports season.

Results released Monday show Rose-Hulman has a 61-59 lead over Franklin after nine sports seasons. The remainder of the season includes 12 more sports.

The Commissioner’s Cup is awarded to the institution accumulating the most standings points in the HCAC’s league championship events. Rose won the league-wide award in 2008 and 2010.

The Engineers have also captured the HCAC men’s All-Sports Trophy four times in the past five years. Through the fall sports, Rose-Hulman is in second place in both the men’s and women’s all-sports standings.

During the fall, Rose-Hulman was first in men’s soccer and second in men’s cross country and women’s tennis. Women’s golf and volleyball both finished third.

Basketball

• ISU coaches featured — Indiana State basketball coaches shows with Greg Lansing and Teri Moren begin Wednesday, running from 6 to 7 p.m. on WIBQ-FM 98.5. Fans can chat with the coaches and watch the radio show live at 7th and Elm Bar and Grille.

Lansing’s show runs from 6 to 6:30, with Moren’s program 6:30 to 7. Due to scheduling conflicts, the coaches shows will be on Wednesday for the next two weeks before returning to their usual time slots on Monday evenings starting Nov. 26.

• Scrimmages slated — Paris High School boys and girls basketball teams will take in a preseason preview at 7 p.m. tonight in Ernie Eveland Gym.

Varsity, junior varsity and freshman teams will take part in 10-minute scrimmages.

Soccer

• Two Sycamores honored for academics — Junior Shelby Troyer and sophomore Aubrie Musselman both earned selection Monday to the first team of the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Team, an award voted on by the Sports Information Directors from around the league.

Musselman had three goals and an assist and ranked second on the team with 31 shots and 17 shots on goal. In the classroom, Musselman has a 3.94 grade-point average in psychology.

Troyer was an honorable-mention all-MVC selection for the second straight season after getting three goals and three assists. Two of Troyer’s three goals were game-winners. She has a 3.96 GPA in exercise science.

Swimming

• Engineers raise cancer funds — Rose-Hulman’s swimming and diving teams will participate in the Ted Mullin Hour of Power Relay for Pediatric Sarcoma Research on Friday at the Sports and Recreation Center.

Athletes will swim four-person relays for 60 minutes from 4 until 5 p.m. Those interested in contributing to Rose-Hulman’s efforts may contact coach Keith Crawford at crawford@rose-hulman.edu or by sending donations with the Hour of Power directive to the Rose-Hulman swimming and diving office. Funds raised for the event act as seed funding for the University of Chicago pediatric sarcoma research program.

  • Terre Haute North offense unable to get going in loss to Mooresville

Jack Kirchner chose to give credit Monday night to Mooresville pitcher Taylor Chitwood, not to the Greg Maddux-size strike zone she seemed to enjoy.
But if there were no excuses forthcoming from Kirchner and his Terre Haute North High School softball team, it wouldn’t have been hard to find a spectator or two to come up with extenuating circumstances about the Patriots’ 4-1 loss at the Class 4A Martinsville Sectional.
