METRO ROUNDUP: Stockon captures Hurtubise feature

TERRE HAUTE — Sullivan native Chase Stockon, who now lives in Elizabethtown, led all 30 laps to win the feature race of the Jim Hurtubise Classic for U.S. Auto Club sprint cars Friday night at the Terre Haute Action Track.

Stockon, 24, survived numerous yellow flags and restarts to hold off second-place finisher Robert Ballou and notch his first Action Track feature victory ever and his second USAC feature win of 2012.

Stockon, who started on the outside of the front row, took home $5,000 for his efforts.

Earlier in the night, West Terre Haute’s Braylon Fitzpatrick established a track record in qualifying with a time of 19.28 seconds. Fitzpatrick is only 16 years of age and this was only his third race at the Action Track.

The only serious traffic incident Friday involved Terre Haute driver Brandon Mattox, who flipped in the second turn early in the 30-lap feature. He walked away uninjured.

Additional race details will appear in Sunday’s Tribune-Star.
