Wildcat players committed to program

CLINTON — Building a program starts with commitment from the players, and second-year South Vermillion coach Chuck Sorrell believes he has that.

The Wildcats went winless in 2011, but the players are hungry to turn it around, Sorrell said during the first week of practice, which was a 24 hour-per-day camp at the school complete with air mattresses, video games, team building and football — lots of football.

“Five days of team building, team camaraderie, while also getting our football work in. We’ve got lots of parents involved getting us meals. We’ll find out who wants it this year and who doesn’t,” Sorrell said. “I’ve heard about teams doing it. I’ve always had trouble with kids not coming back to practice. And it just gets them liking each other.”

The Wildcats have some veterans returning as the team’s leading tackler and rusher from a year ago, Tanner Akers (5-foot-11, 195), leads a group of returnees.

Junior Adam Crouch (6-1, 180) is back under center looking for a breakout season.

“He’s put on 20 pounds, gotten faster.  He got a lot of good experience last year,” Sorrell said.

As far as receiving weapons, the Wildcats have speedy sophomore Daniel Shew (6-2, 175) and quick junior Michael Gurney (5-8, 135).

“They’re the two fastest guys on the team,” Sorrell said.

The Wildcats boast some solid size on the offensive line. Hoping to clear paths for the skill players are Center Daulton Roe (6-0, 205), a second-year starter as a senior.

Adam Stultz (6-2, 325) and sophomore Matt Musall (6-2, 307) will handle the guard positions, and senior Seth Dickey (6-1, 210) joins senior John Natale (6-2, 235) at tackle.

Logan Waldrop (6-3, 195) and Kevin Bailey (5-10, 200) are expected to man the tight end position.

Sophomore Del Dunegan (5-11, 165) will join Akers in the backfield at running back.

Akers is joined on the defense at linebacker by Bailey, and Dickey was second on the team in tackles in 2011 from his defensive end position. Natale will play opposite Dickey at end.

Newcomer Dallas Thomas (6-4, 220) will earn a role at defensive end and offensive line. Dunegan will be a leader among the defensive backs at free safety.

Charlie Manbeck, a former colleague of Sorrell’s at Indianapolis Pike, takes over as defensive coordinator.

Several players are making the step up from junior varsity after that squad posted a 7-2 record last season.

Many of those players have put in the work to improve.

“They’ve learned to win,” Sorrell said. “And 30 of our 35 players were 90 percent attendance in weight room. So we’ve definitely gotten bigger, faster and stronger this offseason.”

Sorrell emphasized that the seniors have stepped up.

“We’re expecting a better year. Motto is buy in. Parent club is going strong. You can tell a lot of them have bought in. A few more games at home this year.”

Sorrell is upbeat.

“It’s only possible to be better,” he concluded.
