TERRE HAUTE —
Dalton Mitchell couldn’t quite match his school-record performance a night earlier, but his 12th-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke was the highlight for Terre Haute South in the boys high school swimming finals Saturday at the Indiana University Natatorium.
Mitchell’s preliminary time of 52.36 seconds was the 10th-best time Friday and he came back Saturday with a 53.06 clocking for his 12th-place showing.
Mitchell also helped South’s 200 medley relay team place 14th in a time of 1:39.54. Christian Wilhelm filled in for Chandler Bray, who was ill, joining Josh Ford and Collin McCord in that race.
“It was an interesting weekend,” South coach Jeff Thompson told the Tribune-Star. “We had a lot of adversity to overcome. But Christian Wilhelm stepped up … and Dalton Mitchell had a great lead-off leg [in the medley relay]. We grew a lot. It’s a young team and the future looks very bright.”
South diver Alex Davis placed 30th, failing to emerge from the first round of competitors in that event Saturday morning.
South finished 38th in the team standings with 11 points. Chesterton won the team championship.
