TERRE HAUTE —
Terre Haute South’s A.J. Reed, unofficially the leading home run hitter in Indiana high school baseball during the 2010 season, has been named a first-team all-state selection by the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association.
Reed, who helped lead the Braves to their fourth straight sectional championship, had a Vigo County-record 18 homers plus 57 RBI and also served as South’s ace pitcher.
Also named to the Class 4A all-state team was third baseman Caleb Mason of Northview. Tyler Wampler and Scott West of West Vigo were honorable-mention selections in Class 3A, as were Jacob Hayes of South and Zac Neihaus of Northview in Class 4A and Zach White and Blake Price of Riverton Parke and Billy Newton of Shakamak in Class A.
Reed is the fifth South player to earn first-team all-state baseball honors. The others were current Braves coach Kyle Kraemer, Matt Samuels, Joe Haley and Derek James.

• Mumaw gets all-star nod — Cody Mumaw of South Vermillion has been selected to participate in the 36th annual IHSBCA All-Star Series on July 9-10 at Richmond.
Mumaw, who be a first baseman for the South team, is at least the fourth Wabash Valley player selected. He will join Terre Haute South’s Jacob Hayes and West Vigo’s Tyler Wampler on the team, while Northview’s Caleb Mason was selected but will be unable to participate for health reasons.
The two teams play a doubleheader July 9 and a wooden-bat game July 10. North, which won all three games last year, leads the series 57-45.
A banquet July 8 will honor the all-stars. The state’s player of the year will also be recognized that night.
• Post 346 juniors win — At Terre Haute South, Wayne Newton Post 346’s junior American Legion team defeated the juniors from Clark County Post 90 by a 4-3 score on Wednesday.

• Riley 11s win — At Riley, the Riley 11-year-olds won their division of the Riley Invitational that concluded Sunday.
The host team defeated Linton 10-1, Terre Town 10-0, Riley (Hayes) 12-2 and Linton 6-0 in the championship game. Kavan Crowell hit a two-run homer in the final game.
Team members are Nick Barrett, Will Buchanan, Wiley Clinkenbeard, Kavan Crowell, Grant Dennany, Ryan Friedrich, Ethan Hunter, Cody Moshak, Conner Owen, Nick Payne, Tony Smodilla and Blake Speth. Dave Friedrich is manager and David Owen and Jonathan Hunter are coaches.
The team is at a tournament in Evansville this weekend and will go to Batesville July 8-12 for state tournament play.
Basketball
• Craft earns Academic All-America award — Terre Haute South graduate Megan Craft of Vincennes University has been named to the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Academic All-America squad for the 2009-2010 school year.
Craft, who will continue her basketball career at Ball State, had a 3.75 grade-point average and led the nationally ranked Trailblazers in assists during the past season.

ISU's Webb wins heptathlon
Indiana State’s Robert Webb captured the heptathlon Saturday at the Grand Valley State Big Meet as he totaled the second most points in ISU history while dominating the event. Webb scored 5,140 points, which is second only to former Sycamore Anthony Bertoli’s 5,189 points in 2008.
Webb, a senior, established three more personal best efforts enroute to the overall victory as he ran 8.45 in the 60 meter hurdles and 2 minutes, 50.73 seconds in the 1,000 meters while also clearing 13-1 1/2 in the pole vault. Webb entered the second day of the event in the lead with 2,893 points after winning three of the four Friday events and setting personal bests in the long jump and shot put. -
