BLOOMINGTON —
A victory can hide many a quarterback’s flaws.
There’s room for improvement when it comes to Indiana quarterback Tre Roberson, even after the first victory of his college career, a 24-17 win over Indiana State on Saturday night.
The positive: Roberson set career bests in completions (26), attempts (36) and yards (280) in the Hoosiers’ second win of the Kevin Wilson era. His .722 completion percentage was a dramatic improvement from his 57-percent completion percentage last season.
And he completed the longest pass of his career, a 71-yard touchdown throw-and-run to Shane Wynn.
The negative: in the second half, with several opportunities to secure the victory, Roberson and the rest of the Indiana offense stalled.
After the Sycamores drew to within 24-17, Roberson was 1 of 2 for 2 yards on IU’s ensuing drive. On the next IU possession, the Hoosiers drove to the Indiana State 28 but were forced to settle for a field goal attempt — blocked by the Sycamores — after consecutive incomplete passes by Roberson.
His fourth-quarter numbers? Three-of-5 passing for 34 yards, two rushes for 5 yards.
“We got a win, that’s always a plus. But we have a lot of work to do. I have a lot of work to do,” Roberson said.
Wilson was accepting of his player’s missteps.
“I thought he did real well. I think he’s going to have a really good year,” Wilson said.
“We didn’t want to run him a bunch. … We tried to keep him in the pocket, worked on that. I think you saw that he can throw on target, he’s getting better and I think he’ll do nothing but get better.
“I think in time he has the chance to be a quality player and a really good quarterback in the Big Ten.”
It helps that Roberson has a talented receiving corps to throw to, even without last season’s top receiver. Kofi Hughes sat out the season opener after violating team rules.
Roberson spread the ball around, completing passes to 10 different receivers.
“I love our receiver corps. All of them bring their own things. Whenever they get the ball in their hand, they make plays and that’s what I love,” Roberson said.
Wynn was his favorite target on Saturday, catching six passes for 95 yards. Duwyce Wilson and Cody Latimer each had five receptions.
The next challenge for Roberson and the IU offense comes Saturday when the Hoosiers face FBS newcomer Massachusetts (0-1) at the home of the New England Patriots, Gillette Stadium. The Minutemen fell 37-0 at Connecticut, allowing 225 yards passing in the process.
“It’s always good to go out and play a game, see how your hard work paid off,” Roberson said. “I feel way more comfortable [this year]. I feel confident, I know the offense totally.”

Luck having fun with his first OTAs
A year ago, quarterback Andrew Luck was unable to attend the Indianapolis Colts’ organized team activity practices due to school commitments at Stanford.
Luck, though, went on to have a stellar year for the Colts despite the lack of summer work with the team. Still, in a sense, he is a rookie during this year’s OTA workouts.
“These are my first OTAs. I missed these last year, so I think it’s great. It’s great to get on the field with the defense and trouble-shoot some stuff. Obviously, some of us ran some of this stuff [offense] at Stanford [under new offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton].
