Six years is a long wait to get into a show. But for former Indiana State pitcher Brian Omogrosso, the long toil he had in the minor leagues wasn’t done for any ordinary show, it was The Show.
Omogrosso was drafted in the sixth round of the MLB draft by the Chicago White Sox in 2006. He was called up to the parent club for the first time last Friday. Late Tuesday, he made his debut with the Pale Hose in a 19-2 victory over the Texas Rangers at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago.
Omogrosso — who played at ISU from 2003-06 — pitched the final 12⁄3 innings, by which time the White Sox already had scored their 19 runs. Omogrosso allowed four hits, one earned run and struck out one batter.
According to baseball-reference.com, Omogrosso became the 18th Sycamore to play in a Major League Baseball game. Omogrosso is the first Sycamore to make his MLB debut since pitchers Joe Thatcher and Mitch Stetter entered the big leagues in 2007.
Omogrosso entered the game with one out in the eighth and with Mike Napoli on first base. Texas center fielder Craig Gentry, the first batter Omogrosso faced, laced a double to left. After Omogrosso struck out Alberto Gonzalez, Texas shortstop Elvis Andrus doubled to right to knock in Napoli and Gentry.
Omogrosso did not allow another run. In the ninth, Brandon Snyder and David Murphy hit singles for the Rangers, but Omogrosso capped a scoreless inning by retiring Yorvit Torrealba to end the game.
Omogrosso was a closer with the Sycamores from 2003-06. He made 58 appearances in three seasons in Terre Haute (he missed the 2005 campaign with an arm injury). During his ISU career, Omogrosso was 5-3 with a 3.66 ERA with 11 saves and 109 career strikeouts.
Omogrosso’s best campaign was his final season with ISU in 2006. The right-hander went 3-2 with a 1.51 ERA and four saves for an ISU team that was 20-34.
Omogrosso had played for five different minor league teams in the White Sox system. He missed most of the 2010 season with an arm injury.
Omogrosso isn’t the only Sycamore close to the bigs. Pitcher Matt Zaleski, a former teammate of Omogrosso’s at ISU, is also in the White Sox organization at Triple-A Charlotte. Zaleski, who played at ISU from 2001-04, is 3-2 with a 4.16 ERA.
Former ISU catcher Nevin Ashley — a Sycamore from 2004-06 — also has reached the Triple-A level in the Tampa Bay Rays organization, but has been injured for much of the 2012 season.

Hurdlers Cam Stewart and Cole Seward and discus thrower Lee Davis were the winners for North, enabling the Patriots to finish with 60 points to 59 for the Braves.

Luck having fun with his first OTAs
A year ago, quarterback Andrew Luck was unable to attend the Indianapolis Colts’ organized team activity practices due to school commitments at Stanford.
Luck, though, went on to have a stellar year for the Colts despite the lack of summer work with the team. Still, in a sense, he is a rookie during this year’s OTA workouts.
“These are my first OTAs. I missed these last year, so I think it’s great. It’s great to get on the field with the defense and trouble-shoot some stuff. Obviously, some of us ran some of this stuff [offense] at Stanford [under new offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton]. But to get out there with the defense and trouble-shoot some stuff is good,” Luck said Wednesday as the team wrapped up its first week of on-field voluntary practice sessions. - Colts hoping for more high marks on draft picks
