TERRE HAUTE — A good showing at the ISU Pre-National Invitational helped the Indiana State men’s cross country team move up in the Great Lakes Region rankings released Monday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The Sycamores entered the Pre-Nationals ranked eighth in the Great Lakes Region but moved up to seventh in this week’s poll.
The top four spots remained the same with Wisconsin on top followed by Butler, Indiana and Michigan. Notre Dame jumped from ninth to fifth, with Dayton moving from seventh to sixth and Indiana State from eighth to seventh.
Ohio State fell from fifth to eighth with Michigan State ninth and Kent State 10th. Miami (Ohio) remained 11th, Eastern Michigan 12th, Central Michigan 13th and Purdue 14th. Marquette was replaced at No. 15 by Oakland.
Indiana State finished 19th out of 34 teams competing Saturday in the Men’s Blue Race that included eight nationally ranked teams and three others that received votes in the USTFCCCA poll.
The Sycamores compete next at the 2009 Missouri Valley Conference Championships at Bradley on Oct. 31.
Honors
• Two gridders chosen — Scott Eaton, who leads not only his own Rose-Hulman team but also the entire Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference in tackles, and Indiana State offensive tackle Josh Jellison have earned weekly football honors for their work in games played Saturday.
Eaton is the Exchange Club of Terre Haute’s Athlete of the Week after recording 16 tackles, two for 12 yards in losses, and forcing a fumble that led to an Engineer touchdown in Saturday’s 28-21 home loss to Defiance.
Jellison, who helped pave the way for the Missouri Valley Conference’s best rushing performance of the week, is the MVC’s Offensive Lineman of the Week.
Eaton has 92 tackles for the season — Rose’s No. 2 tackler has 56 — in addition to 7.5 tackles for 34 yards in losses and three quarterback sacks for 29 more yards in losses. He’ll be honored at today’s Exchange Club luncheon at noon at the Holiday Inn.
Jellison was nominated for his award after the Sycamores had 212 yards on the ground in a 38-21 loss at Illinois State. Antoine Brown of ISU had his first 100-yard game of the season, and Ryan Roberts ran for two touchdowns.
Both teams are back in action this Saturday, the Engineers (3-4, 1-3 HCAC) at Bluffton and the Sycamores (0-7, 0-4) in their homecoming game against Western Illinois.
In other honors:
• Engineers earn both awards — Rose-Hulman swept the HCAC Player of the Week honors in men’s and women’s soccer as announced by the league office on Monday.
Rhys Evans, who had game-winning goals in two road wins for the Engineers, won the award on the men’s side and Molly Richardson, who had the only goal in a 1-0 win over previously unbeaten Hanover, was the women’s honoree.
Evans scored in overtime in a 2-1 win at Anderson and opened the scoring in a 2-0 win at Hanover for the Rose-Hulman men, who have won seven straight and are now 9-5-1, 5-0 in conference play. The Engineers play at home today against Franklin.
Richardson’s game-winner propelled Rose-Hulman, 6-8 overall and 5-1 in the HCAC, into a first-place tie in the conference standings. The Engineer women have a home match Saturday against Bluffton.
Golf
• Mills, Ward claim titles — At Columbus, David Mills of Evansville and Molly Ward of Indianapolis claimed championships in the PUMA Hoosier Junior Championship played Saturday and Sunday at Otter Creek.
Mills finished with a 6-over-par 150 score to win the boys title. Adam Schenk of South Knox tied with Chase Wagner of Bedford North Lawrence for second, each with 153.
Brandon Bekkering of Clinton had rounds of 85 and 89 for 174.
Ward shot 167 to win the girls title. Taylor Gohn of Columbus North shot 168 to tie two other girls for second.
Kaelyn Lingenfelter, daughter of former Terre Haute South golfer Lyle Lingenfelter, tied for seventh with 174 and Terre Haute North sophomore Rachel Welker had rounds of 93 and 90 to place 18th with 183.

MIKE LUNSFORD: Books open our eyes to that which we will never see
I got a letter last week from a friend, Sister Margaret Quinlan, who lives amidst the beauty of the St. Mary-of-the-Woods campus. Besides the email space and the time she invests in describing the flowers and trees and birds that she shares with her roomies out there, as well as her accounts of teaching and traveling, Margaret most often writes about books. She loves them, and she knows I do, too.
