METRO ROUNDUP: Rose women’s tennis picked second in HCAC

TERRE HAUTE — The Rose-Hulman women’s tennis team has been selected to finish second in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference this season, according to a preseason poll of league coaches released Tuesday

Transylvania was picked to win the league’s regular season title with 92 poll points and five first-place votes. Rose earned the second spot with 88 poll points and four first-place votes.

The Engineers tied for the HCAC regular-season championship last season to earn its second consecutive league title. Transylvania earned the NCAA tournament bid by winning the conference tourney in October.

Manchester received the remaining first-place vote and was picked third with 70 points. Anderson finished fourth, followed by Franklin and Hanover rounding out the top six.

Earlham was selected seventh, with Defiance, Bluffton and Mount St. Joseph rounding out the preseason poll.

The majority of Rose-Hulman’s playing rotation returns this season, including all three players who won double figure match totals in singles play in 2011.

The returnees include Rose’s No. 1 singles player and an all-conference selection in junior Marie Stettler, who finished 9-6 in singles and 13-2 in doubles play in 2012.

Junior Paige Cook finished 14-2 last year, sophomore Kylie McCollum won 10 singles matches, and senior all-league selection Melissa Montgomery also won 10 singles matches.

Rose-Hulman opens its season Sept. 1 in the Thomas More Doubles Invitational.

Golf

n Werner wins — At Noblesville, Terry Werner defeated John Zitkovic in a playoff to win the Indiana Senior Amateur title in play concluded Tuesday at Harbour Trees Golf Club.

Werner and Zitkovic each shot 141 to edge Tim Miller, who carded 142.

Ted Kaperak of Terre Haute tied for 22nd in the field of 80 players with 152.

142 — Tim Miller 69-73.

143 — Bill Barnes 73-70.

144 — Peter Delongchamp 70-74, Jerry McMullen 70-74.
