ISU alum Jordan Fife looking for career performance at U.S. Olympic Trials

TERRE HAUTE — With the U.S. Olympic Trials coming up next week, former Indiana State distance runner Jordan Fife feels as fit and confident as he’s been in his post-collegiate career.

The 29-year-old ran a personal-best time of 8 minutes, 33.89 seconds in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Payton Jordan Invitational at Stanford this year.

“It’s been a couple years since I’ve run a PR until this year. Finally had a breakthrough,” Fife said.

Since a successful career at ISU, where coach John McNichols introduced him to the steeplechase, Fife has trained with Team Indiana Elite, which is sponsored by Brooks Running, in Bloomington since graduating from ISU in 2007. His talents have allowed him to race throughout the nation in addition to a trip to Europe. Without a major sponsor and another breakthrough, Fife knows he can’t keep pursuing his dreams forever.

“This could be the last big go at it, this Trials, maybe one more year after that if it goes well,” said Fife, who’s had to balance a part-time job with a full-time training schedule.

Getting married two years ago has helped him focus more on his training.

Fife has also trained at altitude in Flagstaff, Ariz., the last five years. That boost helped him finish 11th at the USA Championships in 2011.

Fife ran Wednesday night at IUPUI in an American Milers Series race hoping to make a run at the Olympic A standard of 8:20.10, which is required to make the Olympic team. Making the team also means a finish in the top three at historic Hayward Field.

The first round of the steeplechase is June 25, with the finals taking place June 28.

“I’m as fit as I’ve been and I’m ready to go for it,” Fife said.

Fife has been an original member of Team Indiana Elite, and he’s redesigned the group’s website. He hopes to see the group grow.

“That was kind of why it was created in the first place for some of the IU guys who wanted to keep running after college. They’ve got three or four guys that are hoping to do that,” Fife said.

Fife will also have a chance to be a fan of fellow Sycamore alumni in Eugene, as Kylie Hutson and Erica Moore are among the top Americans in the pole vault and 800 meters.

“They’ve been representing the university and moving up toward the top of their events. Hope both are on their “A” game at the Trials,” Fife said.
