Indiana State left-hander Sean Manaea earned his third preseason all-America honor Thursday as the Sycamore starting pitcher was named to the first-team squad by Baseball America.
Baseball America annually polls major league scouting directors to vote on the team and make their selections based on performance, talent and professional potential.
In the past, the preseason all-America team has been a predictor both of the first round of the draft and of team success. For example, nine of the 15 draft-eligible members of last year’s first team became first-round picks last June, two others were supplemental first-rounders and all 15 were selected in the top three rounds. In all, 16 of the 18 players drafted in the first round out of four-year colleges last year appeared on one of BA’s three preseason all-America teams heading into the season.
Earlier in January, Manaea was also named a preseason all-American by Collegiate Baseball newspaper and Perfect Game. During the preseason vote by the head coaches from around the Missouri Valley Conference, Manaea earned first-team preseason all-MVC honors.
The Wanatah, Ind., native and Andrean High School product broke onto the national scene this past summer with the Hyannis Harbor Hawks of the Cape Cod Baseball League, where he was 5-1 with a 1.22 earned run average and a record-setting 85 strikeouts in 57.1 innings.
Over his final five starts he was 5-0 with a 0.26 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 34 innings while allowing just 13 hits and one walk. Manaea was named the league’s B.F.C Whitehouse Top Pitcher and the Robert A. McNeese Outstanding Pro Prospect following his outstanding summer.
Following his sophomore season for the Sycamores, Manaea was a second-team all-MVC selection after posting a 5-3 record and a 3.34 ERA over 17 starts. He struck out 115 batters in 105 innings, ranking 13th in the NCAA in strikeouts and in a tie for third on ISU’s single-season strikeout list.
ISU, picked third in the MVC during the preseason vote, begins its 2013 season Feb. 15-17, playing four games in Huntsville, Ala.
Auto racing
n Clauson prevails — At Peoria, Ariz., Bryan Clauson was a double winner in the first day of Winter Challenge racing for U.S. Auto Club sprint cars Wednesday at Canyon Speedway Park.
Clauson won his heat and the last 20 turns of the 30-lap feature. Racing continues today at the track.

Colts hoping for more high marks on draft picks
A year ago, the Indianapolis Colts received high marks for the impact players the team added through the NFL draft.
Of the 10 players selected, five ended up either starting or seeing extensive playing time (quarterback Andrew Luck, tight ends Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen, wide receiver T.Y. Hilton and running back Vick Ballard) during the Colts’ 11-5 season.
