TERRE HAUTE —
While it was announced after the 2012 season concluded that Terre Haute North and Terre Haute South would no longer be a part of the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference after 2013, last fall was one for the city to remember in a positive fashion.
Terre Haute North senior linebacker Lee Davis, who became the fourth Division I recruit out of this year’s city senior class, was a big part of making that happen. The Patriots had a 6-4 regular-season, finishing in the top half of the MIC standings with a 4-3 mark.
Davis will be playing for Army next year as he travels to West Point after finishing as Terre Haute North’s all-time leader in tackles. Davis joins North teammates Austin Lewis (Western Michigan) and Calvin Blank (Ball State). Former Terre Haute South quarterback Danny Etling is already enrolled at Purdue after he made headlines for being rated as one of the top quarterback prospects in the nation.
Davis had interest from Football Championship Subdivision programs like Southeast Missouri State and Indiana State, but “something about West Point always stood out in my mind,” Davis said. “I visited there in the summer, went up for Boston College game and my parents and I went up for the Army-Navy game. It was incredible. We got second-row seats. That place was packed. Everybody was screaming and yelling.”
Davis, who was All-MIC and honorable mention All-State, will have the opportunity to play at the University of Hawaii next year in addition to trips to Ball State and games with Stanford and Wake Forest.
A dream come true for the diligent 6-foot-2, 230-pound honor roll student that was a key leader for coach Chris Barrett.
“He’s just an extremely hard working young man. To start for four years at linebacker in this conference is quite a feat. He averaged 10 tackles a game for four years,” Barrett said.
Barrett looks forward to following his career, from football and beyond. Davis will be an officer in the U.S. Army upon graduation, a commitment of eight years total.
“I’ve always had an interest in the military. I want to try to be infantry or combat specialist of some kind. After that, maybe an FBI investigator or something like that,” Davis said.
Barrett has no doubt Davis will do well.
“Just a tough kid. Outstanding young man. Has all the characteristics of an athlete that you want. He’s got the skills to be successful at West Point. He’s had a goal and he’s gone after it. He’ll be a very successful man,” Barrett said.
• Seibert to ISU — A playmaking wide receiver for Terre Haute South and state finals participant on the track, Tyler Seibert will run Division I track at Indiana State next year.
“It doesn’t get better than running for your hometown team,” said Seibert, who ran a 400-meter time of 49.5 seconds to take 10th place in the state in 2012.
Seibert will likely run the 400 at ISU, but the decathlon is another possibility he discussed with ISU coach John McNichols. Seibert is also a sectional champion in the long jump. Seibert, who had discussed playing football with former ISU coach Trent Miles, hopes to shave some time in his upcoming senior year.
“My goal is 47 seconds this year. That would be pretty sweet. Been working toward that every day,” Seibert said.

Terre Haute North burst through that crack in the bottom of the second inning Wednesday evening at Terre Haute South, scoring seven two-out runs — all unearned — and going on to a surprisingly easy 12-2 victory over the host Braves in Class 4A sectional action. -

Colts hoping for more high marks on draft picks
A year ago, the Indianapolis Colts received high marks for the impact players the team added through the NFL draft.
Of the 10 players selected, five ended up either starting or seeing extensive playing time (quarterback Andrew Luck, tight ends Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen, wide receiver T.Y. Hilton and running back Vick Ballard) during the Colts’ 11-5 season.
