Vigo County —
West Vigo senior standout Andrew Kump took first place on the first meet of the season at his home course, which can be a treacherous 3.1 miles when the rain comes down as it did Wendesday.
“Welcome to The Jungle,” Kump said after he outraced Terre Haute North’s Tyeson Mundy by 21 seconds to take first place in a meet for Vigo County supremacy.
Kump’s reference to the popular “Guns N’ Roses” song and his affectionate name for the Vikings’ home course are fitting. The course proved it can bring you to your knees.
“The course is really slippery. We kept falling. We tripped on eachother,” said Kump, who avoided that problem by running away for a sizeable lead halfway through the race.
Mundy’s team, however, won the team competition with 26 points to West Vigo’s 45. The Vikings’ senior trio had a strong day with Nathan Kump taking third place in 17:08.7 and Kaleb Blair powering to sixth place in 18:03.4.
“My top three finished like I figured they would,” West Vigo coach Bill Petscher said. “I was hoping to see 4 [Jonah Eckert] and 5 [Austin Romanelly] up a little farther. They’re still learning.”
Terre Haute South was third with 63 as the Braves’ varsity runners did not compete due to a homecoming activity at the school.
Mundy’s sister, Chanli, was the girls winner, racing the course in 19:26.7, which was 59 seconds ahead of teammate Jessi Conley.
West Vigo’s girls team was also runner-up to North. The Patriots had the top seven finishers, and the Vikings’ top four took eighth through 12th.
Senior Sarah Hudson didn’t have her best run of the season for the Vikings, but she was happy to see junior Acetha Tolerson have a strong run. The Vikings’ girls team won its first two meets of the season and ran well at Brown County.
“It was a mudfest for our first home meet so it didn’t go so great,” said Hudson, who was bundled up after the race due to the wet, windy afternoon with temperatures in the mid-50s.
“It was actually really fun. A little dangerous, but it was fun. You really had to concentrate on your footing and where you stepped. You really had to focus today,” Hudson said.
Tolerson led West Vigo with a time of 22:21.6 to take eighth place. Hudson was ninth in 22:54 and Shaelynn White and Taylor Bunch 10th and 11th.
“The times for us are pretty darn good,” West Vigo coach Steve DeGroote said. “I’m just happy for Tolerson, it was the same time she had at Brown County [in great conditions Saturday] so that’s saying quite a bit.”
North girls coach Mike Dason was also pleased with his team. Katie Loebker, Annie Mullican and Emily Cotterman rounded out North’s top five.
“Our girls just did fantastic considering the course and how wet it is,” Dason said. “Chanli wanted to push herself and she did that.”
As for the conditions providing a learning experience, Dason said “we’re already good mudders.”
North boys coach Tom Dever, who has a significanttly less experienced team than Dason, agreed it was a valuable experience.
“Just a couple years ago, regionals, semistate and state were all run in pretty muddy conditions,” Dever said. “The more opportunities the younger guys get to race, the more experience they have for the future.”
Justin Clapp ran a time of 17:25.4 to take fourth place, and freshman Peter Davis was fifth in 17:55.7. Junior Travis Clapp and sophomore Chase Cresgy rounded out the Patriots’ top five.
“It was just a good run, a mid-week type run. The conditions are a little tougher and everything, but when you put your foot on the line, it’s still a race and you go out and compete. Wanted to make sure we got through healthy,” North boys coach Tom Dever said.
Dever was also impressed by his sixth runner, William Hubbs, who ran a faster time than last weekend at Brown County. “For someone like him, competing for a varsity spot, it builds his confidence,” Dever said.
South’s boys team was led by sophomore Kyle Mullins in 10th place, Isaac Wonderlin in 11th and Levi Elrod, Jacob Decker and Brice Snowden taking 13th through 15th.
Freshman Natalie Shanks led the short-handed South girls in 12th place.
All three programs compete this weekend against high-caliber competition in the Flashrock Invitational in Indianapolis.
South standouts Jackson Bertoli and Nikki Thiede and the rest of the Braves were missed at Wednesday’s meet, but they’ll be looking forward to leading their teams this weekend.
Andrew Kump hopes the Vikings build off this race.
“Our team’s getting up there. I think you might see us go a little farther than regionals this year. We’ve got a lot of freshmen coming up and I can’t wait to see how they do at Flashrock this weekend,” Kump said.
