Wayne Newton favorite in sectional

TERRE HAUTE — With a 27-10 record, Wayne Newton Post 346 has proven to be a force among the state’s top American Legion baseball teams.

Four of those 10 losses are to teams in Illinois, and Post 346 is 3-0 against the two teams it could face in this weekend’s sectional tournament at Terre Haute North High School.

Sullivan Post 139 played well in losing 6-3 and 5-1 to Terre Haute, while Washington — a new addition to the Terre Haute sectional — lost 22-2 to Post 346 on July 12. Washington has beaten Sullivan twice, however.

“Anytime it’s tournament time, they’re going to be ready to play. We’ll have to play well to win the thing,” Terre Haute manager John Hayes said.

The Post 346 offense will be a tough nut to crack for the Washington and Sullivan pitchers.

While it’s not one of the most prolific in Terre Haute history, Wayne Newton has averaged 7.2 runs per game this summer.

Indiana State-bound outfielder Tony Rosselli has been the toughest out, as he’s hitting .475 with five home runs and 33 RBIs — all team-highs. Rosselli also had a 16-game hitting streak this summer.

Catchers Dalton Sexton and Preston Tofaute have also been outstanding with the bats this summer, hitting .415 and .379 respectively. Sexton has struck out just once in 53 at-bats.

“Those two have done a really good job this summer,” Hayes said.

Zach Milam (.330), Sam Wolf (.397), Pete Lannoo (.319) and Scott West (.318) are also hitting over .300.

Washington is 3-12 this season as coach Jeff Truelove attempts to build the program in its first year after a long absence.

“Next year, everyone knows we’ve got a team and we’ll be able to get started earlier,” Truelove said. “We haven’t got a lot of wins, but we have had a lot of young kids that have blossomed over the summer.”

Washington is led by outfielder/first baseman Jalen Hyde of Washington High School, who will play for IU Southeast next year.

Sullivan’s standouts include Tanner Butler of Linton, Brock Dowell and Brett Yeryar of Shakamak and Bryce Bement of Sullivan.

Terre Haute has won the sectional every year since 1985 except when Sullivan won in 2001.

Hayes hopes his team finds its groove to make a run toward a state title. Terre Haute was third in the state in 2011, winning state titles in 2010 and 2006.

“It’s had its ups and downs, but that’s not unusual. The kids are not as used to playing so many games. We’ve played almost 40 baseball games in five weeks. We’re very busy.  Especially with the heat, it’s a grind for them,” Hayes said. “Generally at tournament time, they get re-focused and something to play for. Obviously our goal is to win the state tournament. We’d like to get [to the state finals] again, but we’ll have to play well to get there.”

Wayne Newton’s pitching staff will be led by starters Bryan Nacke, a lefty, T.J. Decker, Jimmy Maxwell, Damon Olds and Scotty West.

“It all boils down to pitching. We’ve got to be able to throw strikes and not walk guys,” Hayes said. “Our defense will play well enough. We just can’t give baserunners away.”
