METRO ROUNDUP: Riley 9U becomes World Series champ

Columbus — The Riley 9U Travel baseball team won the USSSA AA World Series in Columbus this past weekend.

The team is made up of six kids from Riley, three from Brazil and one from Clay City.

In pool play, Riley defeated St. Joseph 12-0 and fell to the Indiana Bulls 10-9 last Thursday. On Friday, Riley bested the Saginaw Bay Riverdawgs 13-0 and beat the Indiana Trojans 10-6.

Riley was the No. 3 seed when tournament play began on Saturday. The Trojans were beaten 6-5. On Sunday, Riley knocked off the Illinois Valley Titans 8-7 in extra innings. In the championship game, Indy Nitro was beaten 5-4 in the bottom of the 10th.



In other baseball news:

• American Legion sectional set — Wayne Newton Post 346 will host an American Legion baseball sectional at Terre Haute North beginning Thursday.

Here is the schedule for the double-elimination tournament:



Thursday

7 p.m. — Washington Post 120 vs. Sullivan Post 139

Friday

7 p.m. — Post 346 vs. Thursday winner

Saturday

1 p.m. — Thursday loser vs. Friday loser

Sunday

1 p.m. — championship game

* if necessary, another game will be played 30 minutes after conclusion of the scheduled championship game if neither team had lost twice



• Gardner part of national championship team — Cody Gardner, who played at Terre Haute North, was part of the Indiana Bulls’ 18U Premier National Championship team. The Bulls won the national championship in Springfield, Mo., on Sunday. It was the Bulls’ second consecutive championship.



• Yankees win — Here are results of a Terre Haute Men’s Senior Baseball League game played recently:

Clements (W), Volkers (6) and Nielsen; Crowthers (L), Humphrey (3) and Shahady, Crowthers (3).

Highlights — For the Volkers Group Yankees, John Clements and Kyle Volkers combined to pitch a two-hitter, striking out 10 batters in the seven-inning game. Tim Terry and Andy Jackson led the Yankees with three hits each and Jim Stephens and Mike Hughes contributed doubles.



• Riley All-Stars win — At West Terre Haute, the Riley 14U All-Stars defeated West Terre Haute 11-3 in the semifinals of the Macksville 14U tournament Saturday.

Then Riley defeated the Indy Twins 6-3 in the championship game of the tournament Sunday.

Highlights — For Riley, Chase Mahurin, Kyle Jackson, Beddow and Nathan Biggs each provided hits and runs scored and Justin Wilson gave up only 4 hits over 6 innings on the mound. For the Indy Twins, Ryan Howard had 2 hits.
