PLYMOUTH —
The score made it look like a competitive game, but Wayne Newton Post 346 put the American Legion baseball state championship contest out of reach early Monday afternoon.
Terre Haute scored three in the first inning, answered a run by Valparaiso in the top of the third with four more in the bottom of the inning, and had a 14-1 lead after five innings before settling for a 14-8 decision that sends the team to Midland, Mich., for Great Lakes Regional play.
“I thought we were the best team there,” manager John Hayes said Monday after Post 346 had a 17-hit attack that involved virtually its entire lineup, “but Valparaiso was pretty darned good too … and Princeton was very good. But our kids rose to the occasion and played well enough to win.”
Valparaiso had prolonged the tournament an extra day by defeating Post 346 Sunday afternoon, after the northern Indiana team had survived a rainout and had emerged from the losers’ bracket.
But Scott West was in command on the mound early Monday, and only some sloppy fielding late in the game enabled Post 94/170 to get as close as it did.
Sam Wolf had three hits, including a two-run homer, and drove in three runs, and Colton Rupska maintained a hot bat with three hits and four RBIs — he has eight in the past two games — of his own.
Kodie Girton, West, Tony Rosselli and Zach Milam all had two hits each for the winners.
It’s a short turnaround for the Terre Haute players, who get on the bus to travel to Michigan at 7 a.m. Wednesday. A tournament banquet is Wednesday night, and Post 346 plays the regional opener at 10 a.m. Thursday against the Wisconsin runner-up team.
It’s the second state championship in three years for Post 346, and the seventh for Hayes, who said Monday night, “Winning never gets old.
“It was just a thrill to win it,” Hayes continued, “but these tournaments are a grind. Now we’re ready to go up there [to Michigan] and grind some more.”
