TERRE HAUTE —
Rose-Hulman has been selected to finish sixth in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference this season in a preseason poll of league football coaches.
The Engineers finished 5-3 in conference play last season and tied for second place in the HCAC standings. Rose-Hulman returns five starters on offense, six starters on defense and the starting punter from the 2011 squad.
Franklin was chosen to win the conference and has been selected No. 13 nationally by d3football.com this season. The Grizzlies received 79 poll points and seven first-place votes.
Mount St. Joseph was selected second by the league coaches after a 6-4 record and a 5-3 conference mark. Hanover, Bluffton and Defiance rounded out the top five.
Rose-Hulman was chosen sixth, followed by Manchester, Anderson and Earlham.
Offensively, the Engineers return two all-conference players and five overall starters. Senior Kyle Kovach led NCAA Division III in all-purpose yardage and earned Little All-America honors last fall. Sophomore offensive tackle Eric Taylor earned second-team all-league honors in 2011.
Senior quarterback Mitch Snyder of Casey returns behind center, with a total of three offensive line starters providing depth up front. Snyder recorded the sixth 2,000-yard passing season in Rose-Hulman history last fall.
Defensively, Rose-Hulman returns two starters on the line, two at linebacker and two in the secondary. Senior linebacker Ryan Gallagher claimed first-team all-league honors, with sophomore linebacker Grant DePalma and senior defensive back Jordan Martin earning spots on the honorable mention all-conference squad.
Junior punter Eric Schaible also returns after claiming second-team all-league honors last fall with 15 punts inside the opponent's 20-yard line and just four touchbacks.
Rose-Hulman's schedule begins with a home matchup against Kalamazoo at 7 p.m. Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. Homecoming features a battle with Manchester on Sept. 22. The remaining home contests are with Bluffton, Anderson and Earlham.
• Northview jamboree — The annual junior varsity/freshman jamboree is 10 a.m. Aug. 11 at Northview High School.
JV play begins at 10 a.m., freshman play at noon. In both cases, Northview and Danville play in the first quarter followed by Terre Haute North vs. Terre Haute South, Danville vs. South and Northview vs. North.
Tickets are $5.
Volleyball
• Engineers picked fifth — After making its first trip to the NCAA Division III volleyball tournament last fall, Rose-Hulman has been selected to finish fifth in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference this season.
Five teams tied for first-place honors in the HCAC regular season last fall before Rose-Hulman won the HCAC tournament.
The league preseason poll reflected the balance shown last year. Hanover was picked to win the league with 88 points and two first-place votes. Transylvania was chosen second with 83 points and three first-place votes. Third-place Bluffton tallied 76 points and two first-place votes, Mount St. Joseph (74 points and one first-place vote) was chosen fourth, with Rose-Hulman receiving 71 poll points and the final two first-place votes.
The remaining picks included Defiance in sixth place followed by Anderson, Manchester, Franklin and Earlham.
Rose-Hulman has two experienced seniors in three-year all-conference player Anna Lewer and recent NCAA Division III Sportsmanship Award winner Erika McGuire. The roster also includes five juniors with two varsity letters each, several returning sophomores, and perhaps the largest incoming freshman class in program history.
Rose-Hulman opens the season at the Illinois College Invitational on Sept. 1. The home-opening Rose-Hulman Invitational is Sept. 8-9.

Sycamores bow out of MVC Tournament
Indiana State’s baseball was out of pitching, and after a loss to Wichita State on Thursday, the Sycamores were out of second-chances too at the Missouri Valley Conference baseball tournament. But in the end, Friday’s elimination game rematch against the Shockers was a sampling of ISU’s season overall — the Sycamores were out of luck.

Luck having fun with his first OTAs
A year ago, quarterback Andrew Luck was unable to attend the Indianapolis Colts’ organized team activity practices due to school commitments at Stanford.
Luck, though, went on to have a stellar year for the Colts despite the lack of summer work with the team. Still, in a sense, he is a rookie during this year’s OTA workouts.
“These are my first OTAs. I missed these last year, so I think it’s great. It’s great to get on the field with the defense and trouble-shoot some stuff. Obviously, some of us ran some of this stuff [offense] at Stanford [under new offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton].
