Vikings fall in overtime

Evansville North leads all of extra period vs. West Vigo

WEST TERRE HAUTE — It was a pretty good weekend for both high school basketball teams that competed in a nonconference game Saturday in the Jim Mann Green Dome at West Vigo.

Homecoming magic eluded the Vikings, however; they missed a potential game-winning shot at the end of regulation and never led in the extra period, falling to Evansville North 62-59 in overtime.

For the Vikings, who had snapped a four-game losing streak with a 10-point road win against longtime Western Indiana Conference nemesis Edgewood a night earlier, it was a mild disappointment but a definite improvement over the previous two weekends.

For the Huskies, who spent most of their weekend in a bus but also won at New Albany on Friday, it was even sweeter.

“We only used six [players] last night, and again tonight,” pointed out coach Scot Bunnell of the Huskies, “so I thought we showed great toughness … and [the Vikings, who don’t substitute much either] did too.”

“I thought the effort was there. I couldn’t be more pleased with that,” said coach Joe Boehler of West Vigo. “And the big picture is, I thought we got better this weekend as a basketball team.”

Neither of the two backcourt-dominated teams could shake the other. Evansville North’s 40-35 lead at the end of the third quarter — after the Huskies scored its last seven points — was the biggest by either team in regulation time that included six ties and 16 lead changes.

West Vigo’s Jordan Houser created the last of those ties with a 3-pointer with 1:55 left in regulation time. After the Huskies missed an off-balance shot from inside that went out of bounds, the ball went back in Houser’s hands the rest of the way.

“Sometimes we’re just best when we can create,” said Boehler, whose team held the ball well over a minute before Houser missed another 3-point attempt in the final seconds.

North’s Drew Watters opened the overtime period with a 3-pointer, however, and the Vikings were behind the rest of the way. Although they answered Husky scores three straight times, they fell behind by a point each time — a 2-pointer after Watters’ trey and 1-of-2 free throw shooting after a pair of North baskets. The visitors hit 7 of 8 free throws down the stretch, once pulling ahead by as many as seven points.

West Vigo’s first lead came on a 3-pointer by Houser that put the Vikings up 10-9 with 3:08 left in the first quarter, but North scored the last four points of the period.

The Vikings got the first five of the second quarter and then the lead went back and forth with almost every possession. Eight of the lead changes came in that period, and West Vigo’s chances to take some kind of control of the game were often nullified by the speedy Huskies racing to the other end to counter Viking baskets with their own.

“We knew a lot of their offense is built around transition,” Boehler said afterward, “but that’s hard to simulate in practice.”

West Vigo again didn’t score in the last three minutes of the third quarter, after the Vikings had led most of its first five minutes, but the Huskies went scoreless for almost four minutes in the fourth quarter to let the home team score six in a row — a 3-pointer and a free throw by Nathan Gregg and two free throws by Adrien Corenflos. A driving layup by Houser put West Vigo up 45-44 with 2:52 left, but Mike Robinson of the Huskies was laying the ball in 14 seconds later at the other end, and Jaylen Chambers hit a short jumper that put the visitors on top by three before Houser’s game-tying long shot.

“That kid can play!” Bunnell said of Houser, who led the Vikings with 25 hard-earned points. Unfortunately for West Vigo, the visitors had a pair of 20-point scorers in their backcourt — Chambers with 26, 15 of them in a 6-for-8 first-half shooting performance, and Watters with 20. “He hit some huge shots,” Boehler said of Chambers. “Some of them we couldn’t have defended any better.”

Cody Thornton and Gregg added 11 points each for West Vigo, with Corenflos scoring eight and getting a game-high seven rebounds. Ty Pauley had just six points for the visitors, but handed out eight assists and did a good job defensively on Houser.

“We played a really good team really well,” Boehler concluded. “I hope this makes us better a month from now [in postseason play].”

“We beat a really good team that’s really well coached,” Bunnell summarized.
