Metro roundup: Rose announces Hall of Fame selections

TERRE HAUTE — Rose-Hulman announced this week that it will induct five new members into its Athletic Hall of Fame on Oct. 6 in the Sports and Recreation Center.

Zack Johnson (1998), Jennifer (Krause) Lawrence (2002), James McTaggart (1895), Rob Nichols (1999) and David Yeager (1968) will be added to the shrine prior to the football matchup with Bluffton University.

Induction ceremonies will take place at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 6. Admission is free.

The 2012 Hall of Fame induction will be the 20th in Rose history.

Below is a capsule look at the inductees in Rose-Hulman’s 2012 Hall of Fame Class:



Zack Johnson (mechanical engineering, 1998) — Johnson earned two first-team all-Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference selections in men’s basketball in 1995 and 1996. He helped lead the 1995-96 team to its first NCAA Division III Tournament appearance in nine years and crossed the 1,000-point mark with 1,003 career points. He currently ranks sixth in school history with 129 three-point field goals and averaged over 16 points per game as a junior and senior. After graduation, the entrepreneur has owned several Wabash Valley business and currently runs the local video game lounge eBash.

Jennifer (Krause) Lawrence (civil engineering, 2002) — Lawrence became the first four-time all-conference selection in a women’s sport at Rose-Hulman and set 17 school records that still stand today. She smashed 1,766 kills for the volleyball team and also holds career school records for solo blocks (255), block assists (262) and total blocks (517). She also played one season of basketball at Rose-Hulman. Today, Jennifer serves as Executive Director of the Boone County Solid Waste Management District.

James McTaggart (chemical engineering, 1895) — McTaggart earned three state championships in the 440-yard dash and three in the 220-yard dash in the Indiana Intercollegiate Championships. His efforts helped Rose Polytechnic achieve two team state championships against modern-day NCAA Division I, II and III competition, including Notre Dame, Purdue and Indiana. Following his graduation, James enjoyed several chemical engineering related positions in Pittsburgh and Southern Indiana prior to his passing in 1929.

Rob Nichols (mechanical engineering, 1999) — Nichols earned first-team all-region and all-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference honors during a historic 1999 season to cap one of the top baseball slugging careers in school history. Nichols batted .440 with 66 hits, 22 doubles and eight home runs for the first 30-win team in program history in 1999. The breakthrough season lifted his career totals to a .378 batting average with 116 RBIs, 108 runs scored, 38 doubles and 18 home runs as an Engineer. Today, Rob serves as lead assembly engineering at the Wixom Performance Build Center in Michigan.

David Yeager (mechanical engineering, 1968) — Yeager graduated as the second leading scorer in Rose Polytechnic basketball history with 1,047 career points. His efforts helped the Engineers earn the Prairie Conference Championship in 1968 and also helped the team achieve a 51-35 record during his playing career. He is also listed in the Rose-Hulman record book for a 14-free throw performance against New York Tech in 1965. Today, David works as a full-time consultant to the automotive supplier Metaldyne after a distinguished 35-year career including 21 patents at Ford Motor Co.

Golf

n Dixon named MVC Women’s Golfer of Week — Indiana State senior Emily Dixon has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week, according to an announcement from the league office.

Dixon paced the Sycamores to the team championship of the Chicago State Cougar Classic with a career-best finish as she tied for second with a two-round total of 151, the fifth-best 36-hole total in school history.

The senior was in third after shooting 74 in the first round on the Port Course at Harborside International Golf Center in Chicago, coming back with a 77 in Tuesday’s second round to finish tied for second with a 151 total which is her career low for 36 holes.

The finish was Dixon’s fifth top-10 finish of her Sycamore career and her 11th top-20 finish. Her previous best finish came during her freshman year when she tied for fourth at the Snowbird Intercollegiate. Dixon now has four straight rounds in the 70s to open the 2012-2013 season.

ISU won its fourth team championship in the seven-year history of the program, the first under third-year coach Greg Towne at the Chicago State Cougar Classic.

Volleyball

n DePauw 3, Rose-Hulman 0 — At Greencastle, Rose-Hulman battled host DePauw before falling 25-17, 25-10, 27-25 in Wednesday non-conference college action.

Senior Anna Lewer led the Engineers with eight kills, with junior Casey Levitt adding six. Junior Catherine Fiutem contributed seven block assists and five kills.

Junior Kira Boswell joined freshman Sarah Jensen with 11 assists each, while junior Kate Dangel led the defense with 14 digs.

Rose (8-6) will play host to Denison and Illinois College in the Homecoming Quad on Saturday at Hulbert Arena. DePauw improved to 12-2.

Softball

n Sycamore honored — Indiana State junior Morgan Allee has been named winner of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Golden Shoe Award for the 2011-12 season for her efforts while at Iowa Central College.

“Congratulations to Morgan,” ISU coach Shane Bouman said. “Her aggressive style of softball is just what we are looking for at Indiana State.”

The award is given out each year to the nation’s top base-stealer in each division. Allee recorded an Iowa Central College record with 73 stolen bases last season and earned First-Team NFCA All-American honors.

“You get individual honors by having great coaches and teammates,” Allee said. “I came to Indiana State to win.”

A native of Cedar Rapids, Allee joins the Sycamores after two successful years at Iowa Central, where she set single-season school records in batting average (.540), hits (114), runs (89), triples (nine) and stolen bases (73).

The Sycamores will continue the fall portion of their schedule Sept. 29-30 when they take on Heartland Community College, Olney Community College and Indiana, all at Price Field.

Soccer

Men

n Rose-Hulman 2, Fontbonne 1 — At Rose-Hulman, junior Drew Belk scored both of his team’s goals as the host Engineers topped Fontbonne in college action Wednesday night.

Belk scored in the 25th minute to give Rose-Hulman a 1-0 lead, on an assist from junior John Munson. Fontbonne later tied the score at 1-1 on a penalty kick by Josh Schulz in the 56th minute.

Belk provided the game-winning goal in the 76th minute on a blast courtesy of a pass from junior Ryan Rieboldt.

Sophomore Drew Miller picked up the win in goal with three saves.

Rose-Hulman (3-3-2) will play host to Principia in the annual homecoming match at 1 p.m. Saturday. Fontbonne dropped to 4-2-1.

Women

n Rose-Hulman 1, Fontbonne 0 — At Rose-Hulman, the Engineers scored late in the first half to earn a hard-fought victory over Fontbonne on Wednesday night.

Freshman Katie DeMoss scored in the 33rd minute, on an assist from junior Amy Schleter. Freshman Lucinda Combs recorded her third straight shutout with six saves to lead the Engineers’ defensive effort.

Rose-Hulman outshot Fontbonne 14-8 in the contest. Nicky Wheeler led the offensive effort with five shots.

Rose-Hulman (4-3-1) will play host to Principia in the homecoming game Saturday. Fontbonne dropped to 2-6.

Auto racing

n USAC Nationals set — At Rossburg, Ohio, the U.S. Auto Club 4-Crown Nationals will be contested on Saturday at Eldora Speedway.

Features will be run for Silver Crown, sprint and midget divisions and could go a long way in determining the championships in two of them. Darren Hagen has a 186-point lead over Tracy Hines in the midget totals.

Sixty points separate the three leaders in the sprint division with Dave Darland leading Jon Stanbrough by 15 and Bryan Clauson by 60. Sullivan native Chase Stockon is ninth in the totals.

Three drivers are separated by 13 points in the Silver Crown totals. Kody Swanson leads Bobby East by four and Jerry Coons Jr. by 13.

The only other race left on the Silver Crown schedule is the Sumar Classic 100 set for Oct. 13 in Terre Haute. Sprint car racing is slated for Oct. 12.

Kyle Larson swept all three races in last year’s action in Ohio and will be out to do it again. Rich Vogler was the last driver to do it in 1985 and 1986.
