2 C(K)alebs are better than 1: Sullivan gets big play from Pirtle, Turner

Linton — Call out the name Caleb — no matter how you spell it — and you’d be referring to a hero for Sullivan’s Golden Arrows in high school basketball Tuesday night.

Kaleb Pirtle hit four huge 3-pointers in his first game back from a badly bruised knee and Caleb Turner flirted with a triple-double — 11 points, eight rebounds and a game-high eight assists — as the visitors downed potential Class 2A sectional foe Linton 62-49.

It was a contest that defined the term “game of runs” as the Miners overcame a 16-point halftime deficit to take a 47-45 lead with 4:18 left in the game, only to see the Arrows score the next 13 points and salt the game away.

Rhett Smith led all scorers with 22 points, grabbed seven rebounds and almost single-handedly had the Miners in constant foul trouble, and James Lisman scored 10 for Sullivan. Dess Fougerousse had 15 points and a game-high 17 rebounds and Austin Karazsia scored 14 for Linton.

“[Sullivan] had a run at the end of the first half [scoring the last 12 points of the second quarter for a 37-21 advantage] when we were in foul trouble, and they had a run at the end of the game when we were in foul trouble,” coach Joey Hart of Linton said afterward.

Foul trouble or not, however, the Arrows built their first-half lead by playing extremely well — and did so without their defense creating any devastating runs.

“We played awfully well the first half,” coach Jeff Moore of the Arrows agreed. The first 12 minutes of the second half, however, were a different story.

“[Linton] put on a little more [defensive] pressure, and we didn’t attack it very well,” Moore said. “We also missed a lot of easy shots, and that led us to not playing defense as well as we did earlier.”

Sullivan actually got the first basket of the second half to go up by 18, but Linton responded with 11 points in a row. A free throw by Smith and a rebound basket by Lisman didn’t discourage Linton either, and the Miners got the last four points of the third period to climb within 42-36.

Smith opened the fourth quarter with another free throw, but Fougerousse hit a turnaround jumper and Karazsia got back-to-back layups on nifty passes from Fougerousse and Sam Dyar. Smith’s driving layup put Sullivan ahead 45-42, but Dyar answered with a jumper and Koye Kaiser nailed a 3-pointer from the corner that gave the home team its first — and only — lead.

Smith again drove to the basket, drawing a fifth foul on Linton’s Blake Eaton, and hit the first of a one-and-one to cut the lead to 47-46. Smith missed the second shot, but Turner rebounded it and laid it in to put Sullivan on top.

Linton’s offense, which had been working well most of the second half, seemed to get impatient after falling behind again. An unforced turnover led to a 3-pointer by Pirtle, and Turner got an assist on a basket by Smith, then hit a free throw. A dunk and two free throws by Smith completed the game-deciding run.

“We made plays at the end, and that’s what veteran teams do,” Moore said.

Pirtle hit four 3-pointers for the game — the only ones the Arrows hit, to emphasize the importance of his return — and the three in the first half were just as crucial. He hit his first as part of a four-point play to end the first quarter, turning a 17-13 game into a 21-13 contest, and his next two started the 12-0 Sullivan run to end the half.

“For his first game back, he shot the ball very well,” Moore agreed. As far as Turner’s performance, the Sullivan coach added, “That’s what Caleb Turner does for us. He guards the other team’s best man and he fills the stat sheet with assists, steals and rebounds.”

“They’re a good team,” Hart said of the Arrows. “Those kids have learned how to win a lot of games.

“But we’re not far away,” the Linton coach continued. “I thought we showed a lot of character coming back.”
