Edgewood rally ends West Vigo’s season

GREENCASTLE — West Vigo’s boys basketball team didn’t lose Friday night. The Vikings got beat by Edgewood 57-50 in IHSAA Class 3A Sectional 28.

After Edgewood’s leading scorer Trevor Selburg fouled out with 5:02 to play, two Mustangs came off the bench to make big shots in the closing minutes that ended the Vikings’ season at 10-12.

Edgewood, on an eight-game winning streak, will play Western Indiana Conference-rival Owen Valley in the championship game at 7 p.m. today at Greencastle High School. Owen Valley beat Brown County 56-44 in the first semifinal game Friday.

“I thought when [Selburg] fouled out with about five minutes to go in the game we were right where we wanted to be and then [Edgewood] had some kids come in and hit some big shots that we weren’t expecting them to him. You got to give them credit. I don’t think our kids lost the game I think their kids won the game,” West Vigo coach Joe Boehler said.

West Vigo’s Kyle Stewart drove to the basket for 22 points that kept the Vikings in the contest and put Edgewood in foul trouble. Adrien Corenflos finished with 12 points, seven coming in the first quarter.

Edgewood was led by Selburg 13 points and six rebounds and Tommy Black, who came off the bench to score 13.

West Vigo also was the victim of a good perimeter shooting night. After losing to their Western Indiana Conference rival during the season the Vikings knew the Mustangs were going to pound the ball inside to Selburg. The 6-foot-3 senior had 10 points at halftime when the Mustangs took a 26-22 lead.

But Edgewood hit 7 of 14 3-point shots, including 4 of 9 in the second half.

Selburg fouled out with 5:02 to play and Edgewood’s Clayton Settle hit a 3 to give to Mustangs a 47-42 lead.

“I thought the big difference in the game [was] I thought they hit some clutch shots. I wasn’t really expecting them to hit [3-pointers]. They hit seven 3s. They’re a good basketball team, but I don’t think their strength is shooting 3-pointers and we were willing to live with that a little bit tonight and obviously that killed us,” Boehler said.

West Vigo’s Stewart responded with a 3, then Corenflos converted a reverse layup that tied the score 47-47 with 3:15 to play.

Edgewood scored the next six points, including three by little-used 6-4 junior center Darren Fuller, to give the Mustangs a 53-47 lead with two minutes to play.

Again Stewart tried to rally the Vikings. Stewart drove to the basket for a layup and hit then hit the front end of a one-and-one bonus to bring West Vigo within three, 53-50, with 1:02 to play.

“He’s done that all year. He’s been our leader on the offensive end of the floor. Everybody looks to him to make some plays and he did that just like he’s done all year long,” Boehler said.

But in the final 56 seconds, Edgewood hit 4 of 8 free throw to earn its second straight sectional championship game berth.
