CEDAR FALLS, Iowa —
The Indiana State men’s track & field team captured its second Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship in three years while the Sycamore women posted their best finish since 2001 in finishing runner-up to Wichita State.
“We put ourselves in a hole after the first day and struggled with some lane assignments due to poor qualifying,” ISU men’s coach John McNichols said, “but we started really positive [Sunday] and just like last year outdoors, this team responded to the situation and each one stepped up and did a little better. We slowly got back into things and finally were in control of things by the mile relay. I certainly like the way the guys got after it today.”
Indiana State won the men’s team title with 164.5 points while Wichita State was second with 137.
Wichita State held off the Indiana State women with 147 points to the Sycamores’ 138. Illinois State was third with 122.
“This was a great team effort,” ISU women’s coach Angie Martin said. “We had a chance to win it but this was a huge accomplishment in just one year. We have a lot of heart and earned more points than we were supposed to get. Really looking forward to the outdoor season.”
Greggmar Swift — winner of the 60-meter hurdles in a meet and UNI Dome record time of 7.67 seconds — was named the Championships Most Valuable men’s track athlete. His time is also good for fifth in the nation. Felisha Johnson — winner of the women’s weight throw — was named the Most Valuable female field athlete. McNichols also received his second Indoor Coach of the Year award.
Swift, Arqeil Shaw (400), and Derek Bunch (shot put) each claimed a conference title on the men’s side while Katie Wise (60-meter dash), Leeann Michl (800), and Kimyana Rudolph (pole vault) won a conference crown on the women’s side.
Swift helped ISU dominate in the hurdles, as Adarius Washington was second and Duane Brown fifth. ISU was nearly as effective in the 60-meter dash, with Keath Housley third, Terre Haute North graduate Shaun Smith fourth and Justin Baxtron fifth.
Katie Wise led the women’s sprinters to a big day as well. She won the MVC title with a time of 7.51 seconds. Pernell Joseph was second, Kaisha Martin fourth and Demetra Camble fifth.
Rudolph helped the Sycamore women to a big day in pole vault by clearing a career-best 12-feet, 11 1/2. ISU’s Richelle Kimble was second and Alylssa Markiewicz, Hannah McKnight and Lauren Rice tied for seventh.
Stacia Weatherford was edged at the finish line by Drake’s Sarah Yeager with both runners timed in 8.43 seconds in the women’s 60 meter hurdles. The time was a career best for Weatherford who also lowered her school-record time.
Former North Central standout Shelby Higginbottom chipped in some points for the ISU women, taking sixth in the 800 in 2:15.81.
Dustin Betz ran to second place in the men’s mile, finishing in 4:13.64, and third in the 3,000 in 8:22.27.
Terre Haute North graduate and ISU freshman Connor Curley placed fourth in the pole vault with a jump of 15-9 1/4.
North grad John Mascari was second in the 5,000 in a time of 14:33.17.

Luck having fun with his first OTAs
A year ago, quarterback Andrew Luck was unable to attend the Indianapolis Colts’ organized team activity practices due to school commitments at Stanford.
Luck, though, went on to have a stellar year for the Colts despite the lack of summer work with the team. Still, in a sense, he is a rookie during this year’s OTA workouts.
“These are my first OTAs. I missed these last year, so I think it’s great. It’s great to get on the field with the defense and trouble-shoot some stuff. Obviously, some of us ran some of this stuff [offense] at Stanford [under new offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton].
