Kaperak claims his ninth city golf championship

Final-round 70 gives him four-shot margin of victory

TERRE HAUTE — Ted Kaperak maintained his lead in the Show-Me’s Men’s City Tourney and won his ninth Terre Haute Golf Association city title on Sunday.

Kaperak matched the 70 he shot on Saturday at Hulman Links and finished with a 9-under-par 279 total, four shots better than Rich Schelsky. Schelsky shot 72 in the final round to finish with 283.

Travis Turpen and Tom Jones each had 286 to tie for third and Ryan Roscoe took fifth with 287.

“I have as many wins as runner-ups [in the city] now,” said Kaperak, who went 35-35 with one bogey in his round. He had four bogeys in the four rounds.

He said he had something to prove by winning at Rea Park. “I had never won a city that finished at Rea Park,” he noted. He said getting the 70 on Saturday got him ready to play in the final round.

“It was good to play Rea Park … the course is in very good shape. And it was a good group to play with … I played good enough to win,” said Kaperak.

Schelsky won his first city title a year ago and now has four runner-up finishes.

“Teddy deserved to win. He played the best of our group this weekend. He had an awesome display of putting,” Schelsky said. “I got a birdie on the first hole to get within one but never really put on a charge after that. I had opportunities.”

Charlie Kluesner finished sixth and had the low score in the championship flight, going 35-34 for 69.

Chris Keen won the second flight and also shot 69, the same score he shot on Saturday. He finished with 289.

Darrell Shouse won the first flight and had 70 in the final 18 holes, the same as Gregg Kluesner, who was in the same flight. Shouse was one shot better than Ryan Luce.

Eric Miller won the third flight, edging Eddie Kanizer by a shot. Kanizer also had 70 in the final round, which was played in sunny, cool conditions.

Ken McVey edged Chuck Adamson by a shot to win the fourth flight and Mark Neaderhiser was two shots better than Devon Klutey in the fifth flight while Nate Morgan won the sixth flight.

• Coming up — Several tournaments are coming up in the next three weeks.

Two-man events are scheduled at Geneva Hills this weekend and at Forest Park on Oct. 6-7.

The Interclub Championship is Oct. 14 at Rea Park.
