Rosselli rises to occasion

West, Wayne Newton shut down Crawfordsville

TERRE HAUTE — Future Indiana State outfielder Tony Rosselli had a three-run homer and a double among his four hits Tuesday night to lead Terre Haute Wayne Newton Post 346 to a 7-0 American Legion baseball victory against Crawfordsville Post 72.

Rosselli’s three run blast was his fourth of the summer and gave him 31 RBIs on the season in 33 games for Post 346 (24-9).

“I’ve been seeing the ball lately. I’m just keeping an eye on it, being patient. Just a lot of practice. I’ve just been on it,” Rosselli said. “We’re all playing as a team, we’re hitting the ball well.”

A pair of West Vigo graduates played big roles in the victory also, as Scott West allowed just two infield singles in six innings of shutout pitching to improve to 4-0 on the mound.

Cody Thornton led off the game with a single, scoring on Rosselli’s double, and added a solo homer to left field to lead off the fifth inning. Thornton has taken to the lead-off role well of late.

“After the first week or two he solidified me as the leadoff role. Whatever my role is, I’ll do the best I can,” Thornton said. “We kind of struggled last weekend at Moline. We come back and got a win against a pretty good team, hopefully this helps us take some momentum into this weekend.”

Post 346 then strung four hits together to knock Crawfordsville starter Chase Justus from the game. Zach Milam had one of his three singles, followed by a blooper to right by Rosselli and a line smash to right by Sam Wolf.

Then Daulton Sexton jumped on a first pitch from Mitchell Reeves for a double down the left-field line.

“We’re starting to heat up with the bats a little bit. It’s nice to get going this late in the season. We’ve just got to keep the defense working,” Sexton said.

Sexton said West can be a handful for opposing hitters when he hits his spots. The right-hander did most of the night, although he did walk four and hit a batter.

“He was throwing the ball well, locating his fastball on the outside corner. A lot of his stuff was working. A lot of good things happen when you hit your spots down in the zone,” Sexton said.

Wayne Newton manager John Hayes thought his pithcing staff executed pitches when it had to after struggling with control at times.

“I thought our pitching staff overall threw the ball pretty well. We’ve had trouble walking people, I thought we were around the plate tonight,” Hayes said.

Reliever Kodie Girton struck out three in two innings, walking four, and Pete Lanoo allowed one hit in the ninth.

Crawfordsville Post 72 fell to 15-10 on the season.
