Terre Haute North earns meeting with unbeaten Vincennes Lincoln in boys soccer

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute North’s boys soccer team got its record over .500 at the North boys soccer sectional on Wednesday.

Vincennes Lincoln? It continues to cruise along at 1.000.

The Patriots defeated Northview 4-0 and Vincennes Lincoln eliminated Terre Haute South 8-1 in semifinal action.

North’s Jacob Parham had two goals and Kaden Sloan had three assists in the win over the Knights as the Patriots improved to 9-8-1. Vincennes Lincoln’s Eric Ramirez had six goals for the unbeaten Alices.



• TH North 4, Northview 0 — The Patriots controlled the first half on the scoreboard, but lived dangerously. Northview’s Sean Brockman had a goal disallowed in the second minute after he was ruled offsides. Zach Rodgers also had a chance to score in the 7th minute.

It was Parham who broke through. He got the ball on the left side of the goal box and took a low shot aimed for the lower left corner. Northview keeper Chandler Reeves got his hand on it, but it just barely trickled over the goal line to put the Patriots on the board 10 minutes into the contest.

North scored again five minutes later. Lorenzo Cardinale got the ball in the middle of the attacking zone from Sloan, just outside the 18-yard box. He took a low shot towards the right corner. It appeared Reeves was screened by several Patriots and Knights in the penalty area and he reacted late. Cardinale’s shot dribbled in to make it 2-0.

North had more chances up until the break, but Northview’s Brockman found the back of the net again in the 32nd minute, only to have the goal disallowed again due to being in an offside position.

Parham took away any doubt of the outcome less than a minute into the second half when he took a pass from Sloan and scored to make it 3-0.

“Northview has really improved. I thought our guys responded well to it. It took us a few minutes to get going in the first half, but we got a few goals. Getting that quick score in the second half was big. They responded to the halftime talk really well. I’ll have to remember what it was,” North coach John Welch said.

Jacob Wilson added another goal in the 66th minute to make it 4-0.

Northview (6-9-1) continued to create chances in the second half, but couldn’t cash in on them and did not come as close as it did in the first half to getting on the board. North keeper Christopher Schneck earned the clean sheet.

North and Vincennes Lincoln did not meet in the regular season. While the Alices are among the most prolific scoring teams in the state, Welch said there’s another part of their game that gets overlooked.

“They’ve got a great defense. They’ve only given up 11 or 12 goals all year. People don’t recognize that. South was the only team to score two on them earlier this year. Defensively, they’re tough, and offensively? They’re leading the state in a number of categories,” Welch said.

n Vincennes Lincoln 8, TH South 1 — With 11 minutes to go in the first half, the Braves were tied 1-1 with the Alices.

By halftime, it was 6-1. Such was the scoring power of Vincennes Lincoln forward Eric Ramirez.

The Alices’ senior scored four goals in the final 11 minutes of the first half to overwhelm South and keep Vincennes Lincoln unbeaten.

Ramirez had six goals overall to raise his season total to an astounding 69 goals.

“[Ramirez and strike partner Kyle Richardville] were extremely talented. They had stamina, excellent speed, excellent aggression, excellent sportsmanship, no arrogance and they played together well. They took us apart,” South coach Eric Graves said.

Ramirez got Vincennes Lincoln (18-0) going with a goal nine minutes into the contest, but South held its ground. The reward came four minutes later, when Rush Sommerville scored in the 13th minute to tie the match.

The Braves were able to play even-up with the Alices for the next 15 minutes. However, Vincennes Lincoln broke the deadlock when Ramirez scored via a penalty kick in the 29th minute to make it 2-1.

The floodgates opened from there. Richardville scored a minute after the penalty kick to make it 3-1. Ramirez would then score in the 31st, 35th and 40th minute to give the Alices their five-goal halftime advantage.

Ramirez and Richardville added goals in the second half to round out scoring.

“We tried the best we could to slow them down, we modified our defense, but any small mistake? They make you pay for it,” Graves said.

South finished its season 5-12.
