North Vermillion powers past Rox

Rockville — Led by quarterback Brayden Woodard’s passing and running North Vermillion remained undefeated on Friday night and moved into a Wabash River Conference championship game showdown with Fountain Central next week.

Woodard ran for five touchdowns and threw for another as the Class A No. 7-ranked North Vermillion Falcons overpowered host Rockville 54-20 at Rockville High School.

“Anytime you get to play a team like Fountain Central that’s exciting. Those are the games you work for and those are the games that make it exciting to be a part of high school football,” North Vermillion coach Brian Crabtree said.

Woodard rushed for 146 yards, scoring touchdowns on runs of 50, 54, 14, 29 and 1 yard and threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Kody Zumwalt for the Falcons’ first touchdown of the night.

“[Woodard’s] a heck of a football player and even better man. When he has success it’s because of the five guys blocking up front, the receivers blocking on the edge, the defense maybe flowing with Zumwalt on a play. As good as he is, it’s about that team effort,” Crabtree said.

Rockville stayed with the high-scoring North Vermillion attack into the third quarter. The Rox accepted the opening kickoff of the second half and marched 63 yards in nine plays with Ben Cunningham scoring from the one yard line to cut the Falcons’ lead to 28-20 with 8:19 left in the third quarter.

North Vermillion snatched momentum right out of Rockville’s hands when Cody Wright returned the kickoff 40 yards to the Rockville 30. Woodard scored on runs of 14 and 29 yards to give the Falcons a 44-20 lead with time left in the third quarter.

Rockville fumbled the football on its second play and North Vermillion’s Abbott Dowers scooped up the loose ball and returned it 31 yards as the final second of the third period ticked off the clock with the Falcons leading 47-20.

“We make some crucial mistakes. A couple of turnovers killed us at that point. But I can’t fault our kids for playing hard. At the same time, we played well enough we could have been in the ball game, but we didn’t execute at all,” Rockville coach Herb King said.

Rockville opened the game with a squib kick and recovered the loose ball at the North Vermillion 19-yard line. The Falcons’ defense rose to challenge and stopped the Rox, but after just four offensive plays North Vermillion fumbled and Rockville’s Kyle Paddock recovered the ball.

This time Rockville scored as quarterback Kiontre Wilkey found Ryan Lewis with a 14-yard touchdown pass.

North Vermillion roared back to take the lead for good when Woodard hit Zumwalt with a 15-yard scoring pass. Adam Scott’s point after touchdown kick gave the Falcons a lead they never surrended.

But on the Yankees, a 35-and-over team in the Terre Haute Men’s Senior Baseball League, Terry is “just a youngster” if you ask Larry Roesch, his 68-year-old teammate on the Volkers Group Yankees.
