METRO ROUNDUP: Rex hang on for win at Quincy

QUINCY, Ill. — Casey McCurdy’s three-run homer in the top of the first inning got the Terre Haute Rex off to a good start Sunday night in Prospect League baseball, and the visitors held onto the early lead for a 10-8 win and a split of a two-game road series against the Quincy Gems.

The Rex built a 9-2 lead by the top of the fifth inning thanks to a run-scoring single by Brett Teschner in the third, a two-run single by Alex Reynolds in the fourth and an RBI single by Nick Johnson followed by Spencer Mahoney’s two-run homer in the fifth.

But Quincy battled back, getting within a run when Nick Day and Gregory Allen hit run-scoring singles in the bottom of the eighth. Johnson had another RBI for an insurance run in the top of the ninth, however, and closer Nick Blount got the save.

The Rex had an early 2-0 lead as Brett Teschner drove in a run with a double in the first inning and added a solo homer in the fourth.

But Quincy scored five unearned runs off tough-luck losing pitcher Tommy Strunc in the bottom of the sixth and pulled away.

  • Luck having fun with his first OTAs

A year ago, quarterback Andrew Luck was unable to attend the Indianapolis Colts’ organized team activity practices due to school commitments at Stanford.
Luck, though, went on to have a stellar year for the Colts despite the lack of summer work with the team. Still, in a sense, he is a rookie during this year’s OTA workouts.
“These are my first OTAs. I missed these last year, so I think it’s great. It’s great to get on the field with the defense and trouble-shoot some stuff. Obviously, some of us ran some of this stuff [offense] at Stanford [under new offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton]. But to get out there with the defense and trouble-shoot some stuff is good,” Luck said Wednesday as the team wrapped up its first week of on-field voluntary practice sessions.
