North Vermillion Sectional: Panthers, Falcons to meet for NV title

Sara Dickey has 8 steals, 7 assists for RP

CAYUGA — Outstanding defense and quality passing landed Riverton Parke in the championship game of the Class A North Vermillion Sectional. The Panthers will have to get through the host school tonight in order to secure the program’s first sectional crown since 1992.

Paige Yando had 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the 20-4 Panthers, while sister combination of Elizabeth Dickey — 11 points and 11 rebounds — and Sara Dickey — eight steals and seven assists —were also leaders for the Panthers as they won 64-17 over Covington in Friday’s first semifinal game.

North Vermillion got a tough test from a resilient Rockville squad, but Taylor Turchi came up with clutch steals in the third quarter and swished a 3-pointer with 6 minutes, 20 seconds left to put the Falcons up 55-42. North Vermillion held on for a 71-58 triumph.

Turchi poured in 21 points, including 3 of 4 shooting from 3-point range, to lead the Falcons, who will be trying to avoid a third loss to Riverton Parke this season.

“We felt the pressure, but we just stayed in there and worked as a team,” said Turchi, who’s looking forward to tonight. “I guess third time’s the charm. We’ve been looking forward to this all season. We’ll be ready to go.”

Darby Martin dominated the glass for the Falcons. She grabbed 16 rebounds to go with her 16 points. Martin also hit all four of her free throw attempts as the Falcons made 23 of 31 at the line.

North Vermillion coach Terry Naylor said avoiding a plethora of turnovers is the biggest key to beating Riverton Parke

“If you want to beat Riverton, if you handle their pressure and don’t turn it over and give them easy looks, you have a chance,” Naylor said.

The Falcons did well in the turnover department against the Rox, with none in the first quarter to jump out to a 19-7 lead after eight minutes. A quick-strike Turchi triple made it 26-10 early in the second quarter, and she hit another for a 31-12 advantage.

Rockville came out aggressive after halftime as senior Jerica Carrington set up Jenifer Lee for a 3-pointer to make it 32-23. Shelby Snodgrass added a bucket, and Carrington knocked down a 3-pointer to cap a 9-0 run for the Rox in the first 2:50 of the second half.

Turchi capped the third quarter by making a steal with 15 seconds left and weaving through traffic for a layup to put her team up 50-42.

“That’s probably the best game I’ve seen Turchi play offensively all season,” Naylor said. “She didn’t force the issue when she got it on the break, and she hit the open girl [when it was there]. I haven’t seen her do that as consistently as she did [Friday].”

Lee led Rockville with 19 points, and Carrington scored 13 to go with nine rebounds and five assists.

Riverton Parke was off to the races early on, led by point guard Sara Dickey, who had two steals in the first two minutes, dishing to Yando for a layup on one of them. The junior missed a couple layup opportunities, but her jumper made it 25-11 with 3:40 left before the half.

Sarah Burnham added a 3-pointer to extend a 7-0 spurt by the Panthers before half. Sheldan Falls chipped in 12 points and six steals for the Panthers.

The Panthers are ready for their second straight sectional final.

“We just have to play our defense and not make too many turnovers,” Sara Dickey said.

Yando has posted several scoring games of 20 points or more recently, Riverton Parke coach Josh Douglass said.

“It feels great playing well at the right time of year. It’s been fun,” Yando said. “We’ve been practicing really hard trying to fulfill our dreams.”
