TERRE HAUTE —
The Indiana State women’s basketball team is in dire need of a victory in Hulman Center this weekend.
Bradley visits Terre Haute tonight looking to sweep the season series from the Sycamores, who are in jeopardy of the program’s first seven-game losing streak since the 1995-96 season.
“I think it should [add to motivation]. There’s no doubt that group in the locker room in there is very disappointed,” Coach Teri Moren said. “As I keep saying, we’re in a rough patch right now, and there’s no group of kids that wants to get right back on track more than they do.”
Adversity struck ISU last week with senior Deja Mattox suffering a violent hit to the head during 5-on-5 practice against the Sycamores’ men’s practice squad. Mattox returned to practice for the first time in almost a week Wednesday. She missed ISU’s 78-67 loss at Illinois State last Friday.
“I’ve been walking around campus with a black eye,” Mattox said, a large side of her face still showing bruising. “It was really hard to stay here and listen to the game on the radio.”
Mattox was playing as well as any Sycamore, averaging 16 points during ISU’s 4-5 record during the first half of the Missouri Valley Conference season.
Despite the road loss, the Sycamores remain confident they can have an impact on the race to earn a quality seed for the tournament in St. Charles, Mo., next month.
“I think being back in Hulman Center’s going to help,” Moren said. “They continue to come back in every day and work, and it’s a group that has stayed confident.”
Schoen, who has surpassed 1,000 points recently and continues to climb the MVC’s all-time list for 3-pointers made, would trade the individual accolades to see her team build momentum down the stretch.
“We’re really excited to come back home, looking forward to breaking this streak. Six straight losses isn’t fun,” Schoen said.
ISU needs to get back to defending better.
“When we were winning, that’s what it was all about, our defense. Somewhere on the road that’s gotten away from us a little bit,” Schoen said. “We’ve been playing pretty well. Besides the Bradley game, we’ve been right there in every game. In practice, we’ve been doing situations, like when we’re down four with like three minutes to go, we can’t just roll over. We have to keep fighting and finish some games out.”
ISU’s only road win of the MVC campaign so far came at Northern Iowa, which is Sunday’s opponent for Think Pink Night, a promotion to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Fans are asked to wear pink to the game to show support for the cause of fighting breast cancer.
“I think at some point in everyone’s lives, breast cancer has touched everyone. It’s nice to have a benefit and it’s always fun to put on,” Schoen said.
UNI has played well of late to climb to 8-3 in the standings. Katelin Oney has been in double figures in UNI’s past eight games, including a 33-point outburst at Southern Illinois.
Tonight’s opponent, Bradley, is 4-7 in the MVC, and the Braves will be looking to pass the Sycamores in the standings.
ISU jumped out to a double-digit lead on the Braves in the first meeting, but Bradley had one of its best shooting games of the season.
“Give them a lot of credit for the first time we played them. We got off to a good start despite everyone getting sick. That was the weekend everyone caught that bug,” coach Teri Moren said.
Moren wants her team to focus on the task at hand and make the simple plays.
“I think we’re pressing a little bit,” Moren said. “We’re trying to make things be there that aren’t there. We’re all guilty of pressing a little bit. We need to relax and really allow our offense to be able to execute, and we should be fine.”
