TERRE HAUTE —
Rose-Hulman knocked off a nationally ranked women’s basketball team for the first time since February 2006 with a 59-52 win over No. 12-ranked Franklin College on Wednesday in Hulbert Arena.
Senior Alisa Dickerson led the Engineers with 17 points, a career-high 14 rebounds and a season-high eight assists. Freshman Sheree Williams also reached double figures with 16 points.
Sarah Condra led Franklin with 18 points and Krista Beaman added 10. Franklin dropped to 20-2 for the season and 13-2 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC).
Rose earned its first victory over a nationally ranked team since topping No. 22 Trinity 53-51 on Jan. 27, 2006.
Rose-Hulman shot 62 percent from the field in the first half to jump out to a 32-20 lead at the break. The Engineers turned a 10-8 lead into a 21-10 advantage with an 11-2 run over six minutes to gain control of the first half.
Franklin showcased its national ranking with a strong charge in the second half. The Engineers led by 11 on three occasions before eight straight points from the Grizzlies cut Rose’s lead to 47-44 with 4:01 remaining.
Heather Finnell added a jumper and Williams buried two free throws to push the margin to 51-44 at the 3:00 mark. Franklin pulled within 55-51 on two free throws by Krista Beaman with 1:08 remaining.
Williams hit two more free throws at the 50-second mark to give Rose-Hulman a 57-51 edge and Kasey Dollins hit one of two free throws to bring Franklin within 57-52. Freshman Emily Fuhs added the Engineers final two points on a pair of foul shots at the 21-second mark.
Rose (7-15 overall, 5-10 HCAC) will return to action Saturday in the team’s annual Breast Cancer Awareness Game against Defiance.

Men’s basketball
• Rose-Hulman 66, Franklin 41 — At Franklin, Rose-Hulman placed four players in double figures and relied on a strong defensive effort to top the host Grizzlies in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action Wednesday night.
Junior Austin Weatherford led the Engineers’ offensive effort with 19 points. Junior Nate Gissentanner added 12 points and eight rebounds.
Sophomore Julian Strickland added 11 points and a game-high six assists, while junior Jon Gerken rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points.
Gunner Erwin led the Franklin offense with 12 points.
Rose shot 54 percent from the field and held the Grizzlies to 35 percent. The Engineers built a 29-19 halftime advantage by holding the Grizzlies to 30 percent from the field in the opening half and hitting all nine free throws.
In the second half, Rose-Hulman jumped out of the lockerroom on a 17-7 run to build the lead to 20 points at 46-26 on a three-pointer by Gerken at the 10:43 mark.
The Engineers built the lead to a game-high 26 points to secure the win.
Rose (15-7 overall and 9-6 HCAC) will play host to Defiance at 3 p.m. Saturday. Franklin dropped to 10-12 and 7-8 respectively.

Volleyball
• Sycamores ready — Four members of the Indiana State team will compete for a spot on the USA Women’s National Team and the USA Women’s Senior A2 Teams during open tryouts Friday through Sunday at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Junior outside hitter Morgan Dall will make her second trip to the Open Tryouts and will be joined by junior middle blocker Shea Doran, sophomore outside hitter/libero Monique Morris and sophomore setter Loni Mackinson.
“This is going to really be a great experience for these young ladies,” Indiana State volleyball coach Traci Dahl said. “They are more prepared than ever to really contend for a spot on the roster.”
Dall participated in the tryouts a year ago along with Stacey Qualizza and Kiya James. The Sycamore missed almost half of the 2011 Indiana State season with an injury but still finished the season with 299 kills (4.46 per set) and 21 service aces. The outside hitter ranks 13th in career kills (923), second in career kills per set (3.50) and 11th in attack attempts (2,659).
Doran was named to the Missouri Valley Conference All-Tournament team as the Sycamores made their first trip to the MVC post-season tournament since 1984. The outside hitter had 128 kills (1.86 per set) and 45 blocks last season.
Morris has the ability to play any position required by the team and will be competing for a spot o the USA roster as a libero. The current sophomore had 277 kills (2.61 per set), 33 service aces, 328 digs, and 25 blocks last season.
Mackinson has been a growing force as a setter for the Sycamores despite splitting time at that position last year with Shelbi Fouty. Mackinson had 303 assists (2.91 per set) in 2011 with 17 service aces, 1247 digs, and 18 blocks.
