TERRE HAUTE —
Junior guard Jake Odum of Indiana State is among 25 finalists for the 2013 Lou Henson Award, presented annually to the top mid-major player in college basketball, it was announced Monday.
Odum is averaging a team-best 14.3 points per game, which ranks ninth in the MVC, and his 4.7 assists per game are second in the league. One of the leading candidates for the Larry Bird MVC Player Of The Year Award, Odum is averaging 1.5 steals per game, seventh-best in the league, and he has made 163 free throws this season, which ranks sixth on the ISU single-season list.
Indiana State is 17-11, 9-7 in the MVC, heading into Wednesday’s 7:05 p.m. game in Hulman Center against Drake.
The 2013 Lou Henson Award will be presented at the CollegeInsider.com awards banquet in Atlanta, site of the men’s NCAA Basketball Championship.
Doug McDermott of Creighton and Jackie Carmichael of Illinois State also represent the Missouri Valley Conference on the 25 man list of honorees.
Others are Travis Bader of Oakland, Billy Baron of Canisius, Jerrelle Benimon of Towson, Tommy Brenton of Stony Brook, Ryan Broekhoff of Valparaiso, Isaiah Canaan of Murray State, Will Cherry of Montana, Ian Clark of Belmont, Jake Cohen of Davidson, D.J. Austin.
• Otters open with wins — At Otter Creek, the Vigo County middle school girls basketball tournaments for sixth- and seventh-grade teams began Monday night with the host teams getting wins.
The sixth-grade Otters downed Woodrow Wilson 37-17 and Chloe Mason scored 14 points for the winners and Amani Brown 11 for the Warriors.
In seventh-grade action, Otter Creek beat Woodrow Wilson 27-20 as Camryn Scott scored nine for the Otters and Taylor Ellis eight for Woodrow Wilson.
Semifinal games are tonight with Otter Creek hosting Sarah Scott and Honey Creek hosting West Vigo. Championship games are Thursday.
Baseball
• Manaea honored — Indiana State left-hander Sean Manaea has been named Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week after allowing just one hit and striking out 10 in a six-inning stint Friday against the College of Charleston.
Manaea allowed just five baserunners, none reaching third base, as the Sycamores won the game 3-1. He is now tied for 10th on ISU’s all-time strikeout list with Chris Schaefer (1987-89) with 213.
ISU plays Wednesday at Austin Peay, then has a three-game series at Eastern Kentucky starting Friday.
• Alma 6, Rose-Hulman 4 — At Winter Haven, Fla., Alma College broke a 2-2 tie with four seventh-inning runs and held off a Rose-Hulman comeback Monday afternoon.
Bobby Newman led the Engineer attack with a single, double and RBI, while Hank Akard and Patrick Klima had two hits and two runs each.

Softball
• Engineers split — At Clermont, Fla., Rose-Hulman split its first two games of the 2013 season, beating Immaculata 4-1 before losing 4-0 to Augustana.
Jessica Ahlborn had a three-run game-winning homer in the opener for Rose-Hulman, the third homer of her career. Alyse Mueller had a single and a run and Brianne Widmoyer pitched a complete-game two-hitter with nine strikeouts.
Cassidy Bevington’s double was the only hit for Rose-Hulman in the second game, although Mueller didn’t allow an earned run while pitching a complete game.
The 1-1 Engineers play Augustana and Capital today.
Cross country
• Academic honors for Mayhew — Terre Haute North graduate Zach Mayhew was one of three Indiana University men to earn U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association all-academic team honors, the school announced Monday.
To be eligible, athletes must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.25 and have earned USTFCCCA All-America status or finished in the top 15 in the region.
Mayhew became Indiana’s 27th cross country All-American by finishing 13th at the NCAA championship meet.

Prettyman getting comfortable as boss
At first glance, it would be easy to look at first-year Terre Haute Rex manager Ronnie Prettyman and expect him to have a difficult journey during his maiden voyage as a baseball manager.
Managing in the Prospect League isn’t the easiest job in the world.
Rosters change constantly, especially early in the season when players are still reporting from their college teams. The travel is arduous — a night game in far-off Quincy, Ill., could be followed by a home game, followed by a game at equally far-off Hannibal, Mo. The players have to acclimate themselves to playing every day after having played a maximum of five games a week at the college level. -

“I am extremely honored to be given this opportunity to not only play basketball with and against some great players during this tour, but to also share my Christian faith with those in the Ivory Coast,” Gant commented. “I’m looking forward to growing as a person by delivering aid to those in Africa and by sharing my faith with those we come in contact with. This will also be a great chance to continue to improve on the basketball court just before we start our workouts at Indiana State in the fall.” -

Even after giving up 10 runs Friday night in a 10-6 loss to the Quincy Gems, the Rex (7-2) are still the league leader in ERA at 2.09. -
