TERRE HAUTE —
Terre Haute South possessed the ball with quality pace for much of Tuesday’s boys high school soccer game with Martinsville and hit for a pair of opportunistic goals to take a 2-1 victory.
The Braves converted on a corner kick 14 minutes into the action as junior Rory Sommerville lined a kick close to the goal, and freshman Tony Serrato sprinted across for the header.
“It was an excellent header, placed it well. Rory sent a lot of pace on the ball on the corner, and Tony did an excellent job of cutting near-post and deflecting it in. It was a great play,” said South coach Eric Graves, whose team improved to 2-1 in the season’s early going.
South kept firing as Serrato set up Sam Mimms for a header shot a minute later, and Rory Sommerville just missed South’s sixth shot of the first half after another 10 minutes elapsed.
Keeping the pressure on, senior Rush Sommerville fired a shot at the Martinsville goalkeeper a few minutes later.
But Martinsville created some momentum at its end as the half neared a close. Joseph DeMoss headed a cross high over the head of South goalkeeper Carter Hall with 2:55 left before the break.
The Artesians got two more attempts on goal before the half as well.
Hall made an impressive save five minutes into the second half as the Braves and Artesians continued a tight battle for possession.
South converted with 24:35 on the clock as Graham Wrin scored his first goal of the season.
“Bad pass by the defense. The keeper kicked it, came off the defender, I was just in the right position at the right time,” said Wrin, a junior striker.
“Grahm Wrin was in position as striker,” Graves said. “His job is to press the defense and take advantage of mistakes the defense makes. They had a mistake and Graham was there and we capitalized on it.”
Wrin is one of several new full-time varsity players for the Braves, who graduated a large, successful senior class from 2011.
“Played some varsity on and off last year,” Wrin said. “We’ve got good chemistry together. These young kids been playing together for a long time. I feel like we’ve got some good potential this year.”
South’s defense played well down the stretch, Hall coming up with a save on a close-range shot by Aaron Tincher.
South’s defenders kept the Artesians from getting in good position most of the match.
“Couple guys that have been playing good and catching on to the game real quick. Conor Lewis and [sophomore] Evan Keiser, both new to the varsity scene. They’ve been doing well on the wings on defense and they’ve made good progress,” Graves said.
Graves was happy to see his team set the tone early with assertive play and accurate passing.
“It’s good to beat a team coming out and putting pressure on. It sets the tone for the rest of the game,” Graves said.
The Braves showed poise to maintain the advantage.
“We played back, kept our heads near the end of the game when it got pretty heated. I was proud of that. Sometimes you pull back on offense just to keep things level to keep your team together so you don’t get counter-attacked. We did that very well,” Graves said.
South plays host to Lebanon on Thursday.
