Football teams post strong regular season finishes

TERRE HAUTE — Time to check the results of the final week of the regular season for Indiana high school football teams:

• Ben Davis, Carmel and Center Grove share the championship in the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference, all with 6-1 league marks and 8-1 overall.

Ben Davis edged Carmel 10-7, and Center Grove defeated Warren Central 8-5 in two classic games to set up the tri-championship situation. Carmel allowed just 38 points in MIC games while Ben Davis gave up about eight points per game.

Terre Haute North is fourth in the final standings with a 4-3 mark, beating and finishing ahead of Warren Central.

• Linton defeated North Central in Lucas Oil Stadium to finish 9-0, its fifth unbeaten season in coach Steve Weber’s time at the school. Nice record.

The Miners had five shutouts in the season and outscored opponents 500 to 50.

North Central had a great season, going 7-2 and scoring 287 points. The Thunderbirds will look to rebound from the Linton game against Turkey Run in sectional action while Linton plays North Knox.

Illinois schools have one regular-season game left this week, and Casey takes an 8-0 mark into its final game with rival Marshall. If the Warriors win, it will be seven unbeaten marks in the last nine years for them.

• Good golf — Players from the area competed in some big tournaments during the weekend.

Players had to qualify for the Oakley Hoosier Junior Championship played at Otter Creek at Columbus.

In the boys division, Alec Davis of Greencastle shot 153 to tie for 10th. Adam LaGrange of Terre Haute carded 157 to tie for 28th. Adam Weisheit of Rockville also qualified for the event.

In the girls division, Emma Fisher of Bloomington tied for sixth with 165 and Sydney Shrum of Cloverdale tied for 15th with 174.

Former prep players now in college were in the Small College Classic won by DePauw at Deer Creek Golf Club near Clayton.

Chris Arnold of Cloverdale/Franklin took 11th with 77-78-155.

Brandon Bekkering of South Vermillion/DePauw went 79-81-160 to tie for 21st. Logan Burdick of SV/Wabash was 79-88-167 to take 38th.

DePauw shot 613 to edge Hanover with 616 for first. They were followed by Adrian 624, Franklin 634, Wabash 634, St. Joseph’s 637, Manchester 650, Anderson 685.

• Good man — Funeral services were conducted last week for Joe Kish, who died at the age of 92.

He worked at Indiana State University for more than 30 years in information services and public relations.

He was a good man and gave me my first job in the business — he hired me as student sports information director as a freshman in 1955.

• Tom-Cattin’ It — Chad Collins made his return to the pro golf tour last week, competing in the web.com (formerly Nationwide Series) event in Miami.

He had rounds of 73-69-73-71 to finish 286 and earned $3,672.

• Two golf tournaments remain on the schedule this month for local players.

Fast Eddie’s Backward Scramble is Sunday for four-man teams at Hulman Links. Call 812-877-2096 for information or to enter.

The Providence Medical Group/St. George two-man scramble is Oct. 28 at Rea Park. You can call Tony Tanoos at 812-232-2000 to enter.

This event is a nice one with all the good food prepared by the ladies of St. George.

• Carmel won its third straight state boys tennis championship, defeating MIC foe North Central 4-1 in the finals. NC beat Carmel in the regular season 3-2 to account for Carmel’s only defeat.

In the semis, Carmel bested Bloomington South 4-1 and North Central topped Park Tudor 3-2.

• According to different sources, manager Dusty Baker met with Cincy officials last week but no new contract has yet been offered.

And other reports indicate Scott Rolen may have played his final game.

Tom Reck may be contacted by telephone at 812-232-3231, by email at tm_reck@yahoo.com or by mail at 4284 S. Fifth St., Apt. 3, Terre Haute, IN 47802.
