MECCA —
Terre Haute South is going into the Class 4A Sectional at Northview on Monday with momentum, confidence, a deep bench and a healthier pitching staff than it has had in quite a while.
South’s Braves moved to 22-8 with a 12-2, 10-run-rule victory over McCutcheon in the first round and a deceiving 8-1 victory over Class A No. 20-ranked Loogootee in the championship game.
“It’s been a real pleasure to coach these girls this year. It’s been a real team effort,” South coach Steve Woerner said.
Team effort doesn’t begin to describe South’s effort.
After South beat McCutcheon, seven of the Braves’ starters left to prepare for the prom. That left 11 players and only two starters, for the championship game.
But South belted 14 hits against Loogootee in the title game, led by Mackenzie McGregor’s 4-of-4 and Lauren Rowley’s 3-of-3 performances at the plate.
“We had seven freshmen out there for this [championship] game. I’m so proud of these kids for what they’ve done this year [with record-setting pitcher] Marissa [Stout] being down four weeks,” Woerner said.
Stout (4-1), who missed four weeks with an injury, pitched four innings of one-hit, shutout softball against McCutcheon. She was relieved in the fifth Hanna Gossman.
Then Gossman (4-3) came back to pitch six innings of shutout ball against Loogootee and Stout closed the win in the seventh inning.
“[Gossman] won the big games for us [against North and Carmel]” Woerner said.
South broke the scoreless tie with Loogootee in the bottom of the fourth inning. McGregor led off with a single and scored on Jackie Swain’s triple to the left field fence. Swain scored on a single by freshman Kelsey Gormong’s base hit.
The Braves added one in the fifth inning when McGregory singled home freshman Holly Jones.
South broke the game open with a six-run sixth inning, keyed by sophomore Taylor Schlling’s two-run triple. Jones, McGregor, Gormong, Rowling and Amber Price each had hits in the sixth.
“It’s big. Without our varsity our JV came together and pulled it through,” Swain said.
Things did not go so well Class A No. 6 Riverton Parke. The Panthers lost in eight innings to Loogootee 2-1 and fell to McCutcheon 8-1 in the consolation game.
Riverton Parke’s Sarah Burnham struck out 14 Loogootee batters. But the Panthers could not score the run to support her pitching. They managed only three hits against Loogootee and four against McCutcheon. Burnham was the only Riverton Parke player with two hits on the day and both came against McCutcheon.
“Right now we’re swinging up on everything. We talked [after the game], but we got to do it. Until they level out their bats we’re going to continue to pop up this pitching. We can’t do that and win a ball game. Hopefully we’re going to level things out come Monday,” Riverton Parke coach Joe Cox said.
Loogootee’s first run scored on a dropped ball in a collision at home plate in the first inning. Riverton Parke tie the score in the fourth when Burnham reached base on an error, was sacrified to second by Elizabeth Dickey and scored on a single by Shelby Edington.
“You got to want these games. I didn’t feel like we played these games with the intensity we needed to play with,” Cox said.

Colts hoping for more high marks on draft picks
A year ago, the Indianapolis Colts received high marks for the impact players the team added through the NFL draft.
Of the 10 players selected, five ended up either starting or seeing extensive playing time (quarterback Andrew Luck, tight ends Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen, wide receiver T.Y. Hilton and running back Vick Ballard) during the Colts’ 11-5 season.
While this year’s class may not rival that group in terms of name recognition and flash, it may produce just as many major contributors once the 2013 season gets underway. - Colts in wait-and-see mode for tonight’s NFL draft
