As of November, the 2011 deer season, this is the largest buck taken with a bow that I’ve heard of this year.
Steve Eilbracht did his home work on scouting as well as picking the right equipment. A Bow Tech bow fitted with carbon arrows and the new Rag two-bladed mechanical broad heads were his choice.
Let’s set the stage with Steve placing trail cameras around a favorite bean field that the deer fed in and had routes to go to bed.
On a day in August in Vigo County, Steve said he spotted this buck 100 yards out in the bean field and could tell he was large; he went every night to pattern him.
The first Friday of the season, Steve got into the stand 45 minutes before daylight. As the sun came up so did the buck at 40 yards out, parallel with Steve. After he closed the gap to 20 yards the arrow was released. The buck made the mistake of stopping to see what that guy was doing with that stick and string. The buck felt a sharp pain in his neck and decided to leave out.
If Steve had a beer in his hand he would have been crying in it, for he thought he missed. As he was walking out along the edge of the bean field, “Yes, Eureka”, a large blood trail. Home he went to get his, ‘ace in the hole’ for retrieving deer, his German Sheppard name Sothie. She had been trained by Steve to help recover wounded deer and what better time than now?
Sothie started on the blood trail, taking Steve to a doe that had been wounded days before and not recovered. The coyotes already had a feast. After the buck’s blood trail dried up, she tracked another 50 yards to find the buck down in a group of sapplings. I bet Sophie got an extra doggy treat that evening.
This buck weighed in at 215 lbs with 12 points, scoring 159 7/8. Yes, Steve you just took your buck of a lifetime, of course with the help of your best friend Sothie!
Tony Harmon and many others like the new Rag Mechanical broadhead, for he took a very nice doe with his bow and he said she did not suffer because the broad head bled her out so fast. Good job Tony, you still had to put the arrow in the right spot, which you did.

South Vermillion softball's late-season surge comes to end
A late-season surge by South Vermillion wasn’t quite enough to halt a high school softball sectional winning streak by the host team Thursday night, as Edgewood got on top early and held on for a 5-2 win in the championship game of the Class 3A Edgewood Sectional.
The loss was just the second in the last 12 games for the Wildcats. The Mustangs, however, haven’t lost a sectional softball game for eight years in a row. -
