Terre Haute South takes third, North fourth at MIC golf

PLAINFIELD — Carmel continued its domination of Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference girls golf Saturday at Oak Tree.

The Greyhounds shot 323 to win their 12th straight conference title. Center Grove is the only other school to win a girls golf title, winning one, and finished second with 333.

Terre Haute South shot a solid 347 to take third while Terre Haute North and Ben Davis each shot 378 to round out the top five.

Carmel junior MacKenzie Curtis was medalist with 76. She had three birdies and went 46-40 in her round.

She earned medalist honors for the first time this season and had her second-low score. “My low was 75,” she said.

Maggie Rees of Carmel and Holly Paddock of Center Grove tied for second with 80s and Alexandra Pickens of Terre Haute South had 81 for fourth.

The top seven scores rate all-conference honors.

Pickens went 41-40 in carding her second-low score of the season and had two birdies. “The greens were really fast. I am proud of the team’s finish,” the senior said.

South coach Cara Stuckey also was pleased with the results with the team scores ranging from 90 to 81. Taylor Monroe had 87, Katelynn Gordon 89 and Ali Danielson 90.

“I am really pleased with the performance of the team, shooting 25 shots better than last year with three new players.  Going in, I felt we were the fourth best team. It’s nice to get third,” she said.

“As a team, this  was the best week we have had all year. We worked on our putts and were in the mid-30s today,” she added.

Nicole Anderson led North with 84 to earn all-conference recognition. Anna Potter had 90 for the Patriots.

“Nicole and Anna do what they do. Our young kids are getting good experience. That’s good . . . it should motivate them to work out in the offseason,” said coach Abe Nasser Jr.

North and South both close out the season with Senior Night matches this week and will compete in the Northview Sectional at Forest Park on Saturday.

    Open since 1964, it’s had its fair share of players test their skills, probably several better than 43-year-old Brian Brown of Terre Haute.

    At first glance, it would be easy to look at first-year Terre Haute Rex manager Ronnie Prettyman and expect him to have a difficult journey during his maiden voyage as a baseball manager.
    Managing in the Prospect League isn’t the easiest job in the world.
    Rosters change constantly, especially early in the season when players are still reporting from their college teams. The travel is arduous — a night game in far-off Quincy, Ill., could be followed by a home game, followed by a game at equally far-off Hannibal, Mo. The players have to acclimate themselves to playing every day after having played a maximum of five games a week at the college level.

    “I am extremely honored to be given this opportunity to not only play basketball with and against some great players during this tour, but to also share my Christian faith with those in the Ivory Coast,” Gant commented. “I’m looking forward to growing as a person by delivering aid to those in Africa and by sharing my faith with those we come in contact with. This will also be a great chance to continue to improve on the basketball court just before we start our workouts at Indiana State in the fall.”
