RAMBLIN RECK: ISU looks ready to begin Missouri Valley Conference play

TERRE HAUTE — The first big snow has fallen in the Valley just in time for the return of Indiana’s State’s basketball team from the sunny climes of Hawaii.

The Sycamores had a great showing in the Diamond Head Classic, beating two good teams and losing a tough one to a tough, ranked San Diego State team.

It was tons of fun for ISU fans to watch those games on ESPNU and ESPN2. They undoubtedly gained new respect and maybe some new fans as a result of their play.

They won’t have any time to rest on those laurels in snowy Terre Haute with Illinois State coming to town for the Missouri Valley Conference opener on Sunday.

Each conference game will be a tough one this season and this one will be one of the toughest — Illinois State won at Dayton last week. But if the Sycamores go at it as they did in Hawaii, they could be a winner.

Arizona, by the way, won the Diamond Head Classic, nipping San Diego State 68-67 as Nick Johnson swatted down a shot by Chase Tapley to preserve the victory in the final seconds.

Indiana will be in action again on Friday, playing host to Jacksonville in Assembly Hall.

Connor Coleman of Iowa is a freshman on the Jacksonville roster. He’s the 6-foot-2 son of Todd and Kim Coleman.

Down to two — With Casey dropping a hard-fought decision to Teutopolis, the list of unbeaten boys high school basketball teams has dropped to two in the Valley.

Rockville and Linton both carry perfect marks into the Pizza Hut Wabash Valley Classic and the Rox, ironically, will face Casey in their first game.

Linton, meanwhile, faces Sullivan again. The Miners recently defeated the Arrows in overtime.

Other tournaments are being played this week and next. Clay City is scheduled to face North Daviess in the North Daviess Classic today.

Vincennes Rivet is in the Vincennes Lincoln tournament and Cloverdale is in a tourney at Eminence.

Clay City and Linton also are in the Greene County Invitational next week at White River Valley.

Play begins Wednesday with Linton playing Union and Shakamak going against North Central.

The Eels meet defending champ Eastern in the first game on Thursday and Bloomfield takes on WRV in the final first-round contest.

Bloomfield is taking part in the event for the first time while Rivet no longer is in the tournament. The Cardinals nipped WRV 41-40 earlier in the month.

Springs Valley is the host team for a tournament. The host Blackhawks, coached by Jim Jones, are 4-3 after beating Pike Central last week.

They will meet reigning Class A champ Loogootee in the first game of the tournament.

Loogootee lost its first game last week, losing to Washington on the night the championship banner was displayed in Butcher Gym.

With the Lions losing, Rockville moved to No. 1 in the weekly Class A poll.

Players from the area again were among the leaders in Indiana boys basketball stats last week.

Brooks Weszeley of Sullivan was seventh in assists with 20. Lane Mahurin of Rockville was second in blocks with 33 and Austin Robertson of Union was tied for eighth with 17.

Tom-Cattin’ It — Ashley Brazier has been a standout player in volleyball for Terre Haute South and plans to continue with the sport at Franklin.

She was on the varsity four years and started two of them. She earned all-county honors in 2012.

• Lawrence Central ranked 21st in the final USA Today prep football poll. Hamilton SE was 16th in the prep girls basketball poll last week

• Creighton defeated Tulsa last week to hike its record to 11-1. It is the first time the Bluejays have won 11 games before Christmas. They are 12th in the coaches’ poll this week and will play Evansville in the Valley opener for both teams.

• High schools have hired new football coaches.

Mo Moriarity is set for his second stint at Bloomington South. He coached the Panthers from 1987 to 2001 and won two state titles. He also coached a state champ at Carmel and also has served on the staff at IU.

Warren Central has named Jayson West as its new coach. West was at Lawrence Central the past five seasons and had a 52-12 mark capped by a Class 5A state championship this year.

  • Terre Haute North offense unable to get going in loss to Mooresville

Jack Kirchner chose to give credit Monday night to Mooresville pitcher Taylor Chitwood, not to the Greg Maddux-size strike zone she seemed to enjoy.
But if there were no excuses forthcoming from Kirchner and his Terre Haute North High School softball team, it wouldn’t have been hard to find a spectator or two to come up with extenuating circumstances about the Patriots’ 4-1 loss at the Class 4A Martinsville Sectional.
