When I spoke to Jeff Wilson about directions to this house, he asked if I had four-wheel drive. You need one to get up the drive to the house. When I heard “park at the bottom and I’ll come get you,” I knew I was going to Parke County, God’s country.
Jeff and Gale Wilson are very proud of their 17-year-old young man. When he picked me up at the bottom of the drive, a warm smile and hand shake greeted me. We went straight to the barn where a deer is hanging with sharpening knives. Yes, it is the last day of deer season.
Adam Wilson is an outstanding young man, just listen to what takes up his time. He plays high school basketball, and runs cross country and track. Once a year he goes to Northern Ontario Canada to go walleye fishing, also Sugar Creek in Parke County provides small mouth, ice fishing on lakes and ponds; he has taken pheasants in Nebraska, hunts chukar partridge and quail at put and take hunting reserves with a smile he says “I took a turkey in our backyard”. Deer, of course, squirrel and rabbit are in trouble also with him around.
The reason I’m here is the wild boar he harvested makes a great story. A cousin who was green as a gourd, who had never hunted, called and asked “would you take me on a wild boar hunt?” Well, you bet we will and he will get broke in right.
A 400-acre reserve was chosen in Missouri. A bow and arrow was his choice with a gun back up. Twelve rednecks gathered up to fill one lodge and they planned to walk and stalk or set in stands, guides were even provided.
A three-day hunt was booked and as soon as Adam got out of the truck, he checked his bow and went directly out hunting.
A Hoyt bow is his choice and it tells you he loves bow hunting, a release with carbon arrows and a 70-pound pull.
When starting the hunt, he decided to walk and stalk a wild boar. That is major sportsmanship. To take on an animal at 30 yards that will charge and attack you is awesome.
As stalking several hogs were seen and getting within 20 yards, they spooked and ran off. They went in to the lodge, ate lunch and sat in stands that evening with no luck.
Day 2 offered a better walk-and-stalk day because it rained that night to quiet things down. Dad and lad went together and did not spot as many hogs as the first day, so lunch sounded good. Now Adam got serious by recruiting a guide and taking his gun, so the hunt was on!
In a slight rain, we walked in a crouch position through brush when the finger of the guide pointed to several nice hogs about 60 yards away. With the hogs casually walking off when they came up on a point, coming to Adam, the report of the 44-magnum rifle echoed while the wild boar, ‘at 35 yards’ dropped in his tracks from the bullet hitting him between the eyes. He did not know what hit him. The guide jumped up and down with pats on the back and handshakes. It weighed 225 pounds with very nice tusk, all black in color from the razorback breed.
The guide went to camp not only to get the truck but the group of fellow hunters. Dad told the guide “Ha, would you take me?” Adam thought he was a movie star from all the pictures.
Adam said with a smile, as we were on the way in, dad was the only one left to take a hog, so they spotted a group and dad finished off a perfect hunt with a 170-pound wild boar. All 12 hunters took hogs. That hunt will be in 12 memories forever.
At Nancy’s Broken Arrow in Cloverdale, a bow-shooting range is where you do a woods walk shooting different targets at various yards and as many as 200 people will compete. Yes, Adam proudly displays a first-place trophy. While he showed me the deer, turkey and wild boar trophies in their man cave that he and his dad had taken, I noticed several whitetails that will score 140 to 160 or more. Jeff will sorely miss his best hunting buddy when he leaves the nest and starts his journey down the path of life.
