Ex-players want to place ‘Paul in the Hall’

TERRE HAUTE — Some former Sullivan County athletes are making a big push to get Paul in the Hall.

To be specific, men who played basketball for Paul Weekly at Shelburn and North Central have collaborated on a big push to try and get their former coach into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.

Weekly began coaching Shelburn in 1939 and coached the Panthers until the school closed in 1956. It was said that the school had not had a winning season before 1939 and it is known that the Panthers never had a losing season under Weekly, who spent 1942 to 1946 in the service.

In his first year back from the service, he guided Shelburn to a sectional title, defeating a Sullivan team that had won five straight titles. The Panthers then won a regional at Vincennes to earn a spot in the semistate at Bloomington.

The Panthers’ run ended against Terre Haute Garfield, led by Clyde Lovellette.

The story goes that the student manager for Shelburn had forgotten to pack the shoes for the team. Branch McCracken, the coach at Indiana, arranged for shoes to be obtained at a sporting goods store, doing it for the respect he had for coach Weekly.

The Panthers also won sectional titles in 1948 and 1949, losing to eventual state champ Jasper in its fantastic run in the regional. That team lost only one other game, bowing to Attica in the Wabash Valley Tournament.

Just this bit of information tells you that Weekly deserves to be in the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. Brent Wible and a delegation of other former players will attend a Hall of Fame meeting this month and he will address the group.

Letters of recommendation will be taken to the meeting. Anyone wishing to write one of the letters may send it to Brent Wible, 2047 E. Jasper-Dubois Road, Jasper, IN, 47546-8502. Wible has been in the radio broadcasting business for 37 years.

Good luck.

  • Luck having fun with his first OTAs

A year ago, quarterback Andrew Luck was unable to attend the Indianapolis Colts’ organized team activity practices due to school commitments at Stanford.
Luck, though, went on to have a stellar year for the Colts despite the lack of summer work with the team. Still, in a sense, he is a rookie during this year’s OTA workouts.
“These are my first OTAs. I missed these last year, so I think it’s great. It’s great to get on the field with the defense and trouble-shoot some stuff. Obviously, some of us ran some of this stuff [offense] at Stanford [under new offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton]. But to get out there with the defense and trouble-shoot some stuff is good,” Luck said Wednesday as the team wrapped up its first week of on-field voluntary practice sessions.
