The 13-year-old all-stars from Valle Field took another step in Babe Ruth League baseball state tournament play at Northview High School on Sunday, defeating Noblesville 14-2 in the opening round of the single-elimination finals.
Nick Rush had two hits and was credited with the pitching victory for Valle Field, which used five different hurlers for one inning each. Cody Maloon had four hits, and R.J. Easton, Travis Adams and Brett Herndon three each as Valle Field beat Noblesville for the second time in four days.
Also contributing to the 19-hit attack with one single each were Ben Kelly, Dru Strayer, Beau Buell and Joey Vermillion. Valle Field’s next game is 5 p.m. Wednesday against Batesville, which beat Connersville 14-4 in Sunday’s second game.
The second game of Wednesday’s quarterfinals doubleheader will feature Riley and host Clay County. Riley beat Greenfield 11-1 on Sunday, while Clay County was an 8-1 winner over Shelby County.
Still alive in the lower half of the bracket, which will be trimmed by games today and Tuesday, are Edgewood, two teams from Anderson, New Palestine, Elwood, Delta, New Castle and Plainfield.

n Clark County goes 2-1 — Clark County Post 90 survived its first weekend of American Legion Illinois state tournament play by beating Charleston Post 93 9-4 on Saturday, losing 8-7 in extra innings to Mattoon Post 88 on Sunday and blanking Toledo Post 764 6-0, also on Sunday.
Austin Osborn pitched in all three games of the series, including eight scoreless innings on Sunday.

Pitcher of the Week was Evan Mitchell of the Danville Dans, who pitched a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts.

n Ace at Rea — At Rea Park, Bob Smith of Terre Haute shot a hole-in-one Sunday on the 142-yard 13th hole, using a 7-iron.
Witnessing the shot were Jim Cook, Lloyd Kruzan and Jack Anderson.
Auto racing
n Windom, Gardner win — At Haubstadt, Chris Windom and Damion Gardner were winners in the Indiana Sprint Week finale on Saturday at Tri-State Speedway.
Gardner led the final 26 laps to win the 30-lap feature with Daron Clayton second and Jon Stanbrough third.
Blake Fitzpatrick of West Terre Haute won his heat and took eighth in the main, while Chase Stockon of Sullivan was 13th in the feature.
Windom finished 10th and won his first Indiana Sprint Week title, finishing 29 points head of Bryan Clauson. Levi Jones was sixth and has a 38-point lead over Windom in the U.S. Auto Club sprint point totals.
