TERRE HAUTE —
Terre Haute North Little League celebrated a “Championship Sunday” on its home diamond in twofold fashion, claiming both the 11-12 and 9-10 Little League District 4 titles.
North’s 11-12s won their second straight closely contested game with Clinton in the tournament, winning 5-3 in pool play on Friday night, then earned a 4-2 verdict for the championship.
Earlier in the day, North’s 9-10s easily defeated West Terre Haute 19-0 in four innings in their title tilt.
The 11-12 matchup had clutch play from both teams, several tense moments and even a bit of controversy. In other words, youth baseball-style fun at the old ballpark.
North’s 11-12s jumped ahead with a pair of tallies in the top of the third. Jason Mundell singled, Parker Bray beat out a bunt single, both scoring on a passed ball and a sacrifice fly by Kendall Riley, respectively.
Clinton finally broke through against North’s starter Riley in the fourth. Hunter Michalic knotted the score at 2-2 on his sharply hit, two-out, RBI single to the opposite field.
North attempted to regain its lead in the bottom of the fourth. Chris Taylor led off with a single, moving to third on a wild pitch and a ground out. Blade Pittman grounded back to the Clinton pitcher Brogan Sanders, who looked Taylor back and threw to first for the out. But Taylor dashed home safely.
But the base umpire ruled Pittman interfered with the first baseman, and after a brief discussion with all concerned parties, ruled that Taylor be sent back to third, where he was eventually stranded.
“That [call] was disappointing. I don’t really understand that [call],” North manager Brent Poole said. “But the kids stayed up and recovered from that.”
Clinton threatened in the fifth. Brent Rinehart and Connor Dunegan singled with one out, then a wild pitch put them at second and third. But Riley retired the next two batters, using up his 85-pitch limit in the process, to keep the scored tied 2-2.
In the North sixth, Mundell singled, Parker Bray walked and a wild pitch put runners at second and third with no outs. Riley hit a sharp grounder to third, who looked the runner back, threw to first for the out, but Mundell dashed home for the go-ahead run.
An eerily similar play to the one in the fourth, but this time no interference. Colten Panaranto followed with a booming triple, plating Bray for a 4-2 lead.
“That was outstanding, I mean 11-years old … [Panaranto’s] a big boy,” Poole smiled. “It was definitely a timely hit.”
Chance Cooper relieved Riley in the sixth, retiring the first two batters on two pitches. Then it got tense in a hurry. Michalic doubled, Mason Wiltermood walked, and Nighingale singled to load the bases, before Cooper recovered to retire the final batter on a called third strike.
North advances to the Indiana Little League state tournament in Elkhart from July 21-28.
“If we can get our bats going, we’re definitely very deep in pitching … we could really contend for the state title,” Poole predicted. “We’ve got about six deep [in pitching] which is way more than most teams have. When you’re playing every day [in state tournament], with the pitch-count rule Little League has, it’s definitely a nice thing to have.”
In the 9-10 game, North benefited from 13 walks and a hit batsman by five WTH pitchers, eight of those runners scoring. North scored six, two, four and seven runs in its four innings.
B.J. Hopton was 3 for 3 with two walks, two RBI and three runs scored to lead the North offense. Peyton Dwyer and Garrett Lawson added two-run singles, while Tanner Pittman, Cam Harden, Brandon Hazzard and Lawson had RBI singles.
“We went through the district pretty good, hit the ball well, pitched well,” North manager Chad Lawson said. “All of them went up looking to hit the ball and I was happy about that.”
Lawson also went the distance to earn the victory, scattering four singles in his 70-pitch complete-game outing.
“He threw well … sometimes he makes ‘ole dad nervous … but he came out and threw as good today as I can ask for him to throw,” manager Lawson said.
North’s 9-10s advance to the Indiana Little League state tournament in Dyer, Ind., from July 28-Aug. 2.
Note — The District 4 10-11s tournament begins tonight. North will host Clinton tonight, then the two teams play at Clinton on Tuesday. If necessary, a third game would be played Wednesday at a site to be determined. All games start at 6 p.m.
The winner advances to the Indiana Little League 10-11s state tournament at Franklin Township from July 21-26.

Colts hoping for more high marks on draft picks
A year ago, the Indianapolis Colts received high marks for the impact players the team added through the NFL draft.
Of the 10 players selected, five ended up either starting or seeing extensive playing time (quarterback Andrew Luck, tight ends Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen, wide receiver T.Y. Hilton and running back Vick Ballard) during the Colts’ 11-5 season.
While this year’s class may not rival that group in terms of name recognition and flash, it may produce just as many major contributors once the 2013 season gets underway. - Colts in wait-and-see mode for tonight’s NFL draft
