TERRE HAUTE —
Girls basketball teams from three Wabash Valley high schools will compete today for regional titles at three different sites.
As tough as any regional in the state is the Class 2A affair at Paoli, where top-ranked, defending state champion Evansville Mater Dei and the fourth-ranked host team play at 10:30 a.m. Sullivan’s Golden Arrows, currently ranked third in the state, play eighth-ranked Austin in the second game at Paoli.
In the Class A Tri-Central Regional, North Vermillion is the highest-ranked team in the field, the Falcons meeting unranked Southern Wells in the second game. The 10 a.m. opener at Tri-Central pits two teams who ended the regular season tied for 12th in the state: Lafayette Central Catholic and Randolph Southern.
North Vermillion is trying to become the fourth straight regional champion from the Wabash River Conference. Riverton Parke won at Tri-Central a year ago, Turkey Run the two seasons prior to that.
Shakamak’s first-ever girls regional appearance will be at Southwestern (Shelby), where only the host team has gotten poll recognition.
The Lakers and Tindley, an Indianapolis prep school, play the 10 a.m. opening game, followed by the host team — ranked 11th and defending regional champion — vs. Jac-Cen-Del.
All championship games are at 8 p.m.
