Greencastle shuts out West Vigo

WEST TERRE HAUTE — When West Vigo High School football coach Jeff Cobb breaks down tape from the 44-0 home loss to Greencastle on Friday night, he will take a hard look at one series in the second quarter.

With Greencastle leading 16-0, West Vigo’s Danny Creasey broke free for an 88-yard run to the Greencastle 5-yard line. The Vikings had a chance to cut Greencastle’s lead in half and get back into the game before halftime.

Four plays later, West Vigo turned the ball over on downs at the 4. Greencastle then took the ball 96 yards on 15 plays for a touchdown and a 23-0 halftime lead that slammed the door on the Vikes.

“That’s where you are evaluated as a team,” Cobb said afterward. “Are you tough enough to get the ball in the end zone there? Our offensive line has got to take over and we just didn’t get it done.”

The loss left West Vigo with a 1-1 record. On Friday afternoon, West Vigo learned Evansville Harrison (last week’s opponent) forfeited for using an ineligible player.

Greencastle (2-0) came out throwing. Quarterback Nick Gilliam completed 21 of 35 passes for 277 yards, including touchdown throws of 32 yards to Mac Shuee and 12 yards of Cole Pohlar.

“We had to get back on the grease board and do what we do well and that’s throw the football,” Greencastle coach Josh Buis emphasized.

Greencastle dominated this game in every way. Creasey’s 88-yard run in the second quarter was one of two runs of double figures for the night.

West Vigo’s youth vs. Greencastle’s experience was most obvious with the Vikings’ offense. The Vikings managed just 158 yards of total offense.

“I looked once out on the field and we had four freshmen out there — Hunter Voils, Dakota Short, Josh Beasley and Jacob Lewis,” Cobb said.

West Vigo lost two fumbles, one of which Greencastle’s Justin Baxter returned 77 yards for a touchdown. Three West Vigo quarterbacks combined to throw three interceptions.

“Greencastle is such a good team and you can’t give a team like that opportunities and that’s what we did tonight. If we had scored, it could have been 16-7. It could have been a different ballgame,” Cobb said.

Greencastle took full advantage of West Vigo’s mistakes to build a 23-0 halftime lead.

Facing a fourth down and 7 from the West Vigo 32, the visitors scored when Shuee was left wide open at the goal line.

The Tiger Cubs went ahead 9-0 less than a minute into the second period when Tyler Scott’s punt rolled to the West Vigo 1 and on the first snap, West Vigo was sacked for a safety after fumbling in the end zone.

On the ensuing free kick, Greencastle’s Cole Pohlar returned the ball 27 yards to the West Vigo 24. Two plays later, Alec Pettit scored on a 5-yard run. Sedrick Weinschenk’s second extra-point kick gave the Tiger Cubs a 16-0 lead.

Despite Danny Creasey’s 88-yard run, the Vikings couldn’t get into the end zone after that.

But in the end, Friday’s elimination game rematch against the Shockers was a sampling of ISU’s season overall — the Sycamores were out of luck.
