West Vigo comes through in double overtime against Brown County

WEST TERRE HAUTE — West Vigo worked double overtime Saturday evening to earn a weekend split and a 3-1 record in the Western Indiana Conference.

West Vigo’s Adrien Corenflos, Cade Lindsey and Kyle Stewart combined to hit 7-of-8 free throws in the second four-minute overtime to secure a 55-52 home win over the Brown County Eagles.

“I do get a lot of satisfaction being able to bounce back [from the  loss to Terre Haute South] and play a very difficult game, go to double overtime… I thought we found about every way possible to lose the game, but we were still capable of pulling it out,” West Vigo coach Joe Boehler said.

At the end of 32-minutes of regulation play, the score was knotted 43-43.

West Vigo took a 46-43 lead in the second overtime, but missed the front end of two bonus free throws and Brown County’s Tony Goral, who led all scorer with 19 points, hit a three-pointer with 59 seconds left to set up the second overtime.

West Vigo had the ball with 9.3 seconds left in the second OT, but did not get off a shot.

The Vikings never trailed in the second overtime. Twenty seconds into the extra period Adrien Corenflos put West Vigo ahead with a two-point bucket. Corenflos and Lindsey combined to hit six straight free throws. Stewart added a free throw with five seconds on the clock.

Lindsey led West Vigo’s balanced attack with 15 points, Stewart finished with 13, Corenflos 12 and Aaron Kirby had 10.

In the second quarter and early third West Vigo was in complete control and on the way to an easy win. The Vikings shut out the Eagles for 51⁄2 minutes — the final 3:42 of the second quarter and first 1:54 of the third period — and built a 27-19 lead.

Stewart stole the ball and converted a layup to start the Vikings’ run. Lindsey scored off a steal and pass by Kirby and Lindsey hit a free throw. Corenflos closed the first half with a layup at the buzzer that gave West Vigo a 23-17 halftime lead.

Kirby netted back-to-back baskets to open the second half and the Vikings were up 27-17 at 6:06 in the third period.

But Brown County, a 1-6 team that has lost close games to three undefeated teams, outscored West Vigo 18-7 over the final 6:06 of the third quarter and took a 35-34 lead into the fourth quarter.

“We’re still a very inexperienced team and we lost our composure and allowed them to get right back into the game,” Boehler said.

With two minutes left in regulation play and the score tied 43-43, the Vikings played for one shot. It didn’t fall and the overtimes started.
