PREP ROUNDUP: North, South paired in volleyball too

TERRE HAUTE — The slips of paper holding the names of Terre Haute North and Terre Haute South stayed close together.

A little over 12 hours after the two city rivals drew each other in Class 5A first-round high school football sectional play, they got the same honor on Monday in the upcoming Class 4A volleyball tournament.

The Braves and Patriots play each other at Plainfield on Oct. 18 at approximately 7:30 p.m., following the sectional opener between Northview and defending champion Martinsville. Semifinal and final matches will be played Saturday.

In Class 3A volleyball, West Vigo drew the opening match Oct. 18 at Owen Valley, where the Vikings will play Edgewood (not exactly an unfamiliar sectional foe for the Vikes).

At Plainfield

Oct. 18 — Martinsville vs. Northview, followed by Terre Haute North vs. Terre Haute South

Oct. 20 — Oct. 18 winners play each other, followed by Mooresville vs. Plainfield; championship that night

Class 3A

At Owen Valley

Oct. 18 — West Vigo vs. Edgewood, followed by Greencastle vs. Owen Valley

Oct. 20 — Oct. 18 winners play each other, followed by South Vermillion vs. Brown County; championship that night

Class 2A

At Covenent Christian

Oct. 18 — South Putnam vs. Speedway, followed by Monrovia vs. Covenant Christian

Oct. 20 — Oct. 18 winners play each other, followed by Cascade vs. Cloverdale; championship that night

At Eastern Greene

Oct. 16 — Linton vs. Sullivan

Oct. 18 — Eastern Greene vs. North Central, followed by South Knox vs. Bloomfield

Oct. 20 — North Knox vs. Oct. 16 winner, followed by Oct. 18 winners; championship that night

Class A

At Covington

Oct. 18 — Covington vs. Rockville, followed by Attica vs. Turkey Run

Oct. 20 — Oct. 18 winners play each other, followed by Riverton Parke vs. North Vermillion; championship that night

At Clay City

Oct. 18 — Clay City vs. Eminence

Oct. 20 — Shakamak vs. White River Valley, followed by Union vs. Oct. 18 winner; championship that night



In prep volleyball Monday:

• Rockville 3, West Vigo 0 — At Rockville, Raeann Sutherlin had 22 digs and 11 kills and Emma Riffe 13 digs and 13 assists as the host team won a nonconference match.

Highlights — For Rockville, Emma Riffe had 13 digs, 13 assists, 7 kills and 4 aces; Raeann Sutherlin 22 digs, 11 kills and 3 aces; Jenifer Lee 16 digs, 7 assists, 4 kills and an ace; Morgan Black 8 digs; Megan Gordon 4 digs, 2 assists and 2 aces; Taylor Vukovits 7 digs; DonaMarie Kelley 4 digs, 2 kills and an ace; Meagan White 3 digs, a kill and 3 aces; Sydney Secuskie a dig, an assist and an ace; Paige Boardman a dig and an ace; Maddie Shaffer a dig; and Matty Tinkle an ace.

JV — Rockville won 24-25, 25-20, 15-11.

Next — Rockville (16-13) plays today at Terre Haute North.

Highlights — After scoring the go-ahead touchdown, Voils clinched the win by intercepting a pass on Sullivan’s overtime possession.

Record — West Vigo completed its junior varsity season with a 3-5 record, 3-2 against Western Indiana Conference teams.

    But if there were no excuses forthcoming from Kirchner and his Terre Haute North High School softball team, it wouldn’t have been hard to find a spectator or two to come up with extenuating circumstances about the Patriots’ 4-1 loss at the Class 4A Martinsville Sectional.
