Wayne Newton loses, but still alive

PLYMOUTH — American Legion baseball will have to wait another day to crown the 2012 Indiana state champion.

Rain on Saturday night wiped out the losers’ bracket championship game, and Valparaiso won it early Sunday, then stayed alive by downing Wayne Newton Post 346 11-5 in Sunday’s second game.

Those two teams, who have split a pair of state tournament games, meet at 2:30 p.m. today for the championship.

The Valparaiso team, which represents both Post 94 and Post 170, jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning Sunday against Post 346, which entered the day as the undefeated team in the tournament.

A three-run homer in the top of the fourth by Colton Rupska got Terre Haute back in the game, but only briefly. Valparaiso matched those three runs in the bottom of the inning, and Post 346 got no closer than 8-4 the rest of the way. Rupska added another RBI later in the game.

In other state tournament games so far, Lafayette stayed alive late Friday by eliminating the host Plymouth team 10-7; Valparaiso beat Lafayette 10-0 in the second game played Sunday, after Post 346’s 6-2 win over Princeton; and Valparaiso beat Princeton 8-4 in Sunday’s first game.

Now it’s winner-take-all between Terre Haute and Valparaiso.

“We’ve got to play better [today],” manager John Hayes said by telephone Sunday night, then laughed and added, “We can’t be as bad as we were [Sunday].”
